RedHawks Take Down the Champs 4-2

07/11/2015 9:00 PM -

FARGO, ND – Behind steady pitching and production from newcomers, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks swiped game two of three by a 4-2 final over the Ottawa Champions in front of 3,446 fans at Newman Outdoor Field on Saturday evening.

Steady pitching has been the name of the game lately. Coming into tonight, the team had received quality starts (6 innings pitched, 3 ER or less) in eight of the last 11 games. Taylor Stanton continued that trend on Saturday night, going 6.1 innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on six hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts.

It was the Champions who jumped on the board first. In the first inning player-coach Sebastien Boucher trotted to first after an eight pitch at-bat. Mike Schwartz stepped to the dish next and belted a double to the alley in right-center scoring Boucher on a perfectly executed hit-and-run.

The RedHawks would respond in the second frame. Recently signed infielder Tyler Peterson made his first at-bat in a RedHawks uniform count as he sent a moon shot to the wall in left-center and trotted into second with a leadoff double. He would advance to second on a grounder from Frank Salerno bringing up Connor Andrus to the plate for his first professional at-bat. The former Winston-Salem State Ram sent a chopper up the middle scoring Peterson and tying the game.

Albert Cartwright scored for Ottawa in the third frame off a Mike Schwartz triple sent down the line in right making it a 2-1 game. Fargo-Moorhead responded in the fourth frame. Frazier Hall reached first via base on balls, and would wheel to third on a bloop single from the rookie Andrus that was lifted just over the outstretched glove of the Champions' second baseman Roberto Ramierz. Two batters later Zach Penprase would drive in Hall tying the game 2-2.

In his professional debut Connor Andrus went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Andrus admitted there were some nerves coming into today's game saying, “Even on the flight over, I could barely eat anything. Once I got out here, we've all been doing this our whole life. I tried to say, 'Hey, it's just baseball. Relax.' It worked out for me.”

The RedHawks would plate two more in the fifth. Chad Mozingo led off the inning by taking a fastball on the elbow, and Joe Dunigan followed with a dribbler to second that slipped under Ramirez's glove allowing Mozingo to scoot to third. Joe Staley followed with a single to left scoring Mozingo and Tyler Peterson had a sac fly to deep left making it 4-2 heading to the sixth.

Peterson spent the end of 2014 with the Saints in St. Paul. In his RedHawks debut he went 1-for-3 with a run scored and one driven in. Peterson loved the atmosphere at Newman Outdoor Field, saying, “Home sweet home I suppose. I came out trying to keep things simple. Keep the game slow, be productive out there, and have quality at-bats barreling them up best I could.” He is a 2013 graduate of St. Thomas and the 2013 MIAC Player of the Year.

Taylor Stanton settled down after the third. The right-hander allowed one hit in the next three innings and retired nine of the next ten Ottawa batters he faced.

Stanton ran into some trouble in the seventh. Alex Nunez ripped a leadoff double followed by a single from Chris Winder giving the Champions runners on second and third with one out. Tyler Thompson came on in relief forcing a lineout to second and a flyball to Drew Muren to end the threat for Ottawa.

The next inning featured the Tyler Thompson show. Thompson fielded a sharply hit ground ball with his barehand and tossed over to first for the easy putout. He then proceeded to strike out one and force a popup to shallow right ending the inning.

Mike Nesseth came on to close things in the ninth. The hard-throwing right-hander retired the side ending the game while earning his team leading sixth save of the season. Stanton (2-1, 3.75 ERA) earned his second win in as many starts while Jack Fowler (1-1, 6.96 ERA) took his first loss of the season.

Fargo-Moorhead improves to 14-34 while Ottawa drops to 18-24. The series finale is set for a matinee time of 1 p.m with Ty Kelley (1-5, 3.25 ERA) making his first career start for the RedHawks while the Champions will counter with Drew Cisco (2-3, 5.14 ERA).
