RedHawks Drop Fifth Straight 8-2 to Sioux City

08/05/2015 9:31 PM -

SIOUX CITY, IA – Facing a team led by a familiar face in Steve Montgomery, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks fell 8-2 to the Sioux City Explorers before a crowd of 1,262 fans at Lewis and Clark Park.

For the first time this season, Doug Simunic and his RedHawks were set to face his former player and peer in Steve Montgomery and his Sioux City Explorers. Montgomery is the RedHawks' career leader in saves (47) while he played for the club from 2001-2003. In his final season with the team the RedHawks won the Northern League championship.  At the conclusion of his playing career Montgomery stayed on Simunic's staff and was part of three Northern League championship teams (2006, 2009, 2010) as the team's pitching coach from 2004-2013. He is in his second season as manager of Sioux City.

The RedHawks scored first in the second inning. Joe Dunigan led off the frame with a single to right field followed by a Luke Bailey single advancing Dunigan to second. Bailey, a catcher who was just signed before the team boarded the bus to Iowa, began the season with the Laredo Lemurs before being released in late July. Dunigan would be advanced to third on a ground ball from Charlie Valerio, who was appearing in his first game since June 28th against St. Paul coming off a wrist injury, and would then be brought home on an RBI single from Ryan Pineda giving the ‘Hawks an early 1-0 lead.

Sioux City responded in the home half of the second inning. Ryan Court got things started for the X’s with a double to the alley in left followed by an RBI single from catcher Matt Koch tying the game 1-1. RedHawks’ starter Tyler Alexander would to strike out Tim Colwell, but Bailey dropped strike three and Colwell advanced to first pushing Koch to second. Alexander then walked leadoff man Matty Johnson loading the bases for Brent Keys. Alexander would walk Keys plating Koch giving the Explorers a 2-1 lead. He would then force the former Minnesota Twin Rene Tosoni to fly out to center ending the threat.

The Explorers would utilize the long ball in the bottom of the third. Brock Kjeldgaard led off the inning with a solo shot to straightaway center field.  Alexander would then walk Tony Mendonca bringing up catcher Matt Koch. Koch took a fastball out over the middle half of the plate and roped it for the second Sioux City home run of the game making it 5-1 Explorers.

Meanwhile, Sioux City starter Ryan Zimmerman dominated on the mound. Zimmerman came into the game with the second best ERA in the American Association at 1.97 behind teammate Patrick Johnson. Zimmerman went seven strong innings allowing just one run on six hits with a walk and nine strikeouts. He retired the side in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings while dropping his ERA to 1.92.

Kjeldgaard was back at it in the bottom of the fifth. He led off this inning as well, this time with a standup triple, followed by a Noah Perio RBI single to the alley in left giving the X’s a 6-1 lead. Perio advanced to second on an error from Chad Mozingo on the play putting him in scoring position with Mendonca stepping to the dish. Mendonca would deliver with an RBI single and would be driven in two batters later by Johnson giving the Explorers an 8-1 lead.

The RedHawks would tack one on in the top of the eighth. Facing reliever Billy Bullock, Taylor Oldham led off the inning by being plunked on the elbow. Zach Penprase would then single for his second hit of the night moving Oldham to second. Mozingo stepped to the plate next having for his fourth time of the night and delivered with an RBI single plating Oldham. Penprase and Mozingo would be stranded on second and third ending the threat making it 8-2 Sioux City.

Bullock remained on for the top of the ninth and retired the side ending the ball game.

Alexander lasted five innings allowing eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits with four walks and six strikeouts. The left-hander dealt 126 pitches and faced 30 batters in his five innings of work. He drops to 1-5 and his ERA rises to 3.48. The start from Alexander s the third consecutive outing from a RedHawks’ starter that didn’t meet the qualifications of a quality start (6 IP, 3 ER or less) after a streak of 15 in 20 games.

Zimmerman earns his tenth win of the season and is now 10-2 and keeps pace with the league leaders in the American Association in wins.

Fargo-Moorhead drops it’s fifth straight game and is now 23-45 while Sioux City hits the 50 win plateau and improves to 50-18. Game two of the series is scheduled for tomorrow night as the RedHawks will send Taylor Stanton to the mound while the Explorers will counter with Eric Wordekemper. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with a 6:40 pre-game on 740 AM The Fan with Scott Miller.

NOTES: Luke Bailey went 2-for-4 in his RedHawks debut and his first game since July 24. Charlie Valerio went 0-for-4 in his first game back since June 28th in the DH spot. Zach Penprase went 2-for-4 and has now strung together a seven game hit streak.
