'Hawks Rally Falls Short 8-7 to Gary

08/13/2015 4:50 PM -

FARGO, ND – Having led early on, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks found themselves trailing by three in the bottom of the ninth, but the Gary Southshore RailCats staved off a furious rally by winning 8-7 on Thursday afternoon.

Tyler Herron took the mound before a sellout crowd of 4,434 fans with Charlie Valerio as his battery mate. The last time the duo paired up at Newman Outdoor Field was on June 18th versus the Sioux Falls Canaries. With Valerio delivering signs, Herron spun a three-hit gem en route to a complete game shutout. Thursday's game got off to a different start than the Sioux Falls game. Herron surrendered a leadoff singleto J.D. Pulfer followed by a walk to Drew Martinez, who battled for a ten pitch at-bat to start the game. A sac hit would move the pair over allowing Jaime Del Valle to drive in both runners making it 2-0.

Fargo-Moorhead wasted little time in responding. Drew Muren entered today's game riding a six game hit streak and he added another notch to it on Thursday. Muren belted a solo homer off the foul pole in right cutting the deficit and making it 2-1 after one inning.

The RedHawks would use the long ball to tie the game in the third. Zach Penprase took a fastball up and away and turned on it for his sixth homer of the season tying the game 2-2. With the homer, Penprase tied a career high for home runs in a single season. The shortstop also hit six homers in both 2009 and 2012 with Fargo-Moorhead.

Knotted at two, the 'Hawks busted it open in the fifth. Joe Bonfe led off with a bloop single followed by a Valerio double down the left field line giving Fargo-Moorhead runners on second and third with nobody out. Two batters later Penprase would single scoring Bonfe making it 3-2. The series of events to follow would plate a pair of runs. Muren would take a pitch to the elbow giving Chad Mozingo runners on the corners. Mozingo grounded into the 4-6 fielder's choice allowing Valerio to score from third. First baseman Roger Bernal then made a throwing error that let Penprase wheel home from second giving the RedHawks a 5-2 lead.

Meanwhile Tyler Herron had settled down after giving up two runs in the first inning. It took Herron 51 pitches to get out of the first two frames, but he only required 34 pitches for the third, fourth and fifth innings combined.

After tossing four straight scoreless frames, the RailCats got to Herron in the top of the sixth. Gary placed a four spot on the RedHawks highlighted by a two RBI single laced up the middle by Drew Martinez. The single ended Herron's day, who went 5.2 innings allowing six runs on four hits with six walks and a pair of strikeouts. Nick Cooney came on in relief and made a throwing error right away in an attempt to pick off Metzger at first. The ball trickled away from Joe Bonfe and Martinez bolted home making it 6-5 Gary.

The 'Cats would add a pair in the seventh on a double from shortstop Ryan Brockett extending the lead to 8-5.

Fargo-Moorhead would make a push in the bottom of the ninth. Gary closer Andy Loomis came on for the ninth and gave up a leadoff single to Charlie Valerio to start. Penprase would then single, proceeded by back-to-back RBI singles to left making it 8-7. Two batters later Joe Dunigan stepped to the plate with runners on the corners and two outs. Michael Wing would steal second putting the winning run in scoring position for Dunigan who had been the hero just two nights before. With the count at 2-2, Dunigan struck out swinging as Loomis ended the rally by earning his 14th save of the season.

With the loss, Fargo-Moorhead drops to 27-49 while Gary improves to 34-42 while avoiding the sweep. The RedHawks took 2-of-3 against the RailCats and have now won back-to-back series for the first time this season. The team will hit the road for a three game set north of the border in Manitoba, Canada as they take on the Winnipeg Goldeyes starting tomorrow night at Shaw Park. Ty Kelley (4-6, 4.37 ERA) is set to start game one of the series at 7 p.m on Friday night. All games can be heard on 740 AM The Fan with Scott Miller on the call.
