Alexander Fans 15 On Jake Laber Day

08/19/2016 9:41 PM -
On what was declared Jake Laber Day by the mayor of Fargo, Tim Mahoney, the RedHawks put in a spirited performance in honor of their former teammate, beating St. Paul 4-1 at Newman Outdoor Field on Friday night.

Laber was always a part of baseball in the community from his days with Fargo North high school, North Dakota State University, and his many seasons with the 'Hawks. He's currently the team's franchise leader in starts, innings pitched, and strikeouts. Tyler Alexander channeled the powerful pregame ceremony where the stadium paid their respects to absolutely dominate on the mound. He struck out an incredible 15 batters, a new career-high, and went the whole nine innings. He seems to be the one pitcher who can halt the league's top offense, as in his last start against the Saints he struck out 10 in eight innings and allowed just one run.

As aggressive as Alexander was on the mound, the home team's offense was just as patient. Seven total batters reached base by either being walked, intentionally walked, or hit by a pitch. Three of their four runs came from players whom reached base on balls. In the fifth after the road team got one in the top of the inning, F-M answered with two thanks to Keury De La Cruz and Josh Mazzola consecutively walking with the bases loaded. De La Cruz was hit by a pitch and Mazzola watched four pitches go by to bring in another which made the score 2-1.

The other two runs came in the eighth when K.D. Kang walked, advanced on a wild pitch, got to third thanks to Brian Humphries' single, and scored on a second wild pitch. Humphries himself scored with Mike Gilmartin's RBI single. Alexander continued to command the game in the top halves of the innings, and the 'Hawks came out with a victory on the 19th of the month, the number Laber wore for the team.

Alexander now ties the lead league in wins with 11 wins to just 3 losses, and Corey Williams moves to 1-1. Game two of the three game series will be Saturday at Newman Outdoor Field, slated for a 6:00 p.m. start.
