RedHawks Slip Past Birds

08/26/2016 9:33 PM -
Coming into the St. Paul series a week ago, the RedHawks were 10-16 against their fellow Northern Division opponents. Friday night the team won its sixth out of the past eight games, all facing in-division rivals. The score was 4-3 over Sioux Falls at Newman Outdoor Field.

Going into the prior Winnipeg series F-M just swept St. Paul in three, they took the first two games against the Goldeyes but then dropped the last two. To get back on track they needed to play well against the Canaries who came in winners of three straight. They made a statement right away in the first when Kes Carter led off with a single. He was followed by Keury De La Cruz who demolished a two-run bomb over right field to take a 2-0 lead.

The road team got one back in the second when Blake Schmitt scored thanks to a sacrifice fly by B.J. Guinn. The lead was stolen in the fourth by the Canaries when Guinn drove in another run and scored on Ethan Chapman's RBI. The 'Hawks didn't make an immediate response in the bottom of the inning, but they did in the fifth. Brian Humphries kicked it off with a triple. Mike Gilmartin's RBI tied the game up at 3-3. Carter then came up huge again with a solo home run to give his team the lead.

The pitching by the home team was solid throughout the game. Jose Almarante continued his white hot play and allowed just seven hits with no walks in eight innings. Colton Reavis came in for the save, and despite walking his first batter, kept any hits or runs from happening and earned his tenth save of 2016.

Almarante (4-1) was the winner and Stephen Bougher (1-10) took the loss. Game two of the three game series will be Saturday, 1:00 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field.
