COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT AGAINST ST. PAUL

07/20/2019 9:14 PM -

FARGO, ND — St. Paul starting pitcher Eddie Medina held the RedHawks’ offense in check, to the tune of one run on two hits over 7.1 innings, and a ninth inning rally fell short as the Saints (39-21) beat Fargo-Moorhead (39-22) 4-3 Saturday night at Newman Outdoor Field to claim outright control of first place in the North Division.

The Saints began the game by jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run home run from John Silviano, his sixth of the season. The Saints would add to their lead in the sixth inning with a pair of runners coming around to score on a single by Troy Alexander, giving him his fourth and fifth RBIs of the series.

The RedHawks cut into the Saints’ lead in the bottom of the inning on a Devan Ahart double to the right field corner, driving in Brennan Metzger from second base.

After a controversial call at first base in the eighth inning, Leo Pina of the RedHawks was ejected from the game, forcing Fargo-Moorhead’s coaching staff to get creative with defensive substitutions due to the lack of substitutes. So, last night’s relief pitcher Michael Hope entered the game in right field.

The ‘Hawks then attempted to mount a comeback in the ninth inning, after Chris Jacobs scored on a T.J. Bennett sacrifice fly, Michael Hope found himself at the plate representing the tying run with two outs and Correlle Prime standing on third base. Then, after working the count full, Hope hit a slow chopper down the third base line for his first professional hit and RBI, and making the score 4-3. But, Saints closer Todd Van Steensel came back and struck out Brian Olson to close out the game and give St. Paul sole possession of first place in the north division.

The Redhawks and Saints will finish their series Sunday night at 6:00 PM before the American Association meets in St. Paul for the 2019 All-Star Game.
