Glen Stymies RedHawks Again, Gary Wins 6-1

07/19/2010 9:46 PM -

Willie Glen ran his scoreless streak against Fargo-Moorhead in 2010 to 24 1/3 innings as the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the RedHawks 6-1 in the opening contest of a four-game set at Newman Outdoor Field.

Glen (5-2) tossed a complete game shutout against Fargo-Moorhead at Newman Outdoor on June 26th and followed that performance with seven more scoreless innings against the RedHawks in a July 7th game played in Gary. He shut Fargo-Moorhead down through eight innings before allowing the RedHawks’ only run of the game on Eric Campbell’s RBI single with one out in the ninth. Glen struck out nine and walked only one while throwing 118 pitches.

Gary (26-27) struck first in the third inning off Fargo-Moorhead starter Matt Mossey (3-2). After striking out the first two hitters of the inning, Mossey gave up three straight singles. John Parham’s grounder through the left side of the infield brought home Louis Ott, staking the RailCats to a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Gary leadoff man Adam Klein hit a double to deep right field and advanced to third after Fargo-Moorhead outfielder Mike Coles misplayed the carom off the wall. Shortstop Jay Pecci followed with a two-run home run over the wall in left, extending the lead to 3-0.

The RailCats tacked on three insurance runs in the ninth inning off RedHawks reliever Adam Tollefson. With two runners on, Gary designated hitter Cristian Guerrero crushed a line drive to deep center field. Fargo-Moorhead outfielder Nic Jackson raced back and dove just shy of the warning track, but the ball bounced off his glove and rolled to the wall, giving Guerrerro a two-RBI triple. He then scored from third as Tollefson uncorked a wild pitch to the next hitter, Tanner Townsend.

Mossey went six innings for the RedHawks (31-19), giving up three runs on eight hits. Although all of the runs were earned, Fargo-Moorhead did commit three errors in the game.

Guerrero was 2-for-4 on the night for Gary with a pair of RBI. Ott also collected two hits for the RailCats.

Campbell was 2-for-3 in the game for the RedHawks and drove in the lone run for Fargo-Moorhead.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow in game two of their series. Gary will send Tom  Thornton (4-2, 3.32) to the mound while Tyler Seaman (1-0, 2.89) will get the nod for Fargo-Moorhead.
