Cox Leads RedHawks To 5-4 Victory Over Gary

07/21/2010 10:04 PM -
Left fielder Jay Cox was 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks over the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Wednesday night in front of 3,917 fans at Newman Outdoor Field.
Along with Cox’s big night, the RedHawks (33-19) received a superb effort from their bullpen. Rookie Alex Kent (2-0) threw 3.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter Jake Laber to pick up the win. Kent allowed just two hits and struck out two while not allowing a walk. Casey Hoorelbeke came on in the ninth with two outs to make his league-leading 29th appearance. He needed just one pitch to pick up the save, his first of the season.
Gary (26-29) showed some early offensive punch against Laber, scoring four times in the third inning. Center fielder Mike Massaro took a Laber offering the other way down the left field line for a double to drive in two while teammate Cristian Guerrero crushed a two-run home run to left-center field in the frame.
Fargo-Moorhead chipped away at Gary’s lead in the home half of the fourth. Center fielder Nic Jackson led off with a double down the right field line. He came around and scored on Eric Campbell’s double two batters later. Cox drove in Campbell with an RBI-single to cut the RailCat lead to 4-2.
Cox would again come through in the clutch for Fargo-Moorhead in the sixth inning. With Campbell on first, Cox took an offering from Gary reliever Zeb Engle and drove it over the wall in right field, trying the game 4-4.
The RedHawks would push the winning run across in the bottom of the seventh. With right fielder Mike Coles on first and catcher Kole Zimmerman on third, shortstop Zach Penprase pushed a nifty bunt past the pitcher’s mound and toward Gary second baseman Chris Carrara. Carrara fielded the ball cleanly but was too deep to make a play on Zimmerman, who was breaking for home.
Jeff Williams (0-2) took the loss for the RailCats after giving up one run on two hits in 1.2 innings of relief.
Coles also had a big night at the plate for Fargo-Moorhead, going 3-for-4 in the game.
Massaro was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for Gary to go along with his two RBI.
The two teams will wrap up their four-game series tomorrow afternoon starting at 12:30pm. Gary’s Brad Halsey (3-4, 3.95) is scheduled to lock horns with Fargo-Moorhead’s T.J. Stanton (2-3, 3.61).
