RedHawks Drop Opener to Winnipeg 4-2

05/12/2011 11:15 PM -
On a cool, rainy night in Winnipeg, where the winter gear got pulled out of the closet by the 6,078 fans in attendance at Shaw Park, it was the Goldeyes who pushed through the weather to beat Fargo-Moorhead 4-2 on Opening Day.

Ironically, the star of the game spent the last three seasons in Fargo. Goldeyes catcher Alan Rick had a night to remember against his old team. He was the driving force behind a four-run fifth inning for Winnipeg, slapping a three-run homer to bring home Victor Ferrante and Luis Alen. In the fifth, the Goldeyes would hit for the cycle, with Alen singling, Ferrante doubling and Justin Bass hustling in a triple after the Rick home run. Bass would score on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Wyatt.

“Ever since Fargo let me go, I’ve been ready to get back on the field,” said Rick. “It’s great to be back out there with a new team, new chemistry, and I think we’re ready to surprise some people.”

Solid on the mound for Winnipeg was starting pitcher Isaac Hess, who threw five shutout innings, allowing only two hits and striking out six. Four other Goldeyes pitchers threw Thursday night: Kevin Light, Aaron Hartsock, Zach Baldwin, and, with his first save of the year, Jamie Vermilyea. The losing pitcher on the Fargo side would be Oliver Odle.

“Our defense was awesome and everyone showed up to play today,” says Isaac Hess. “We just played great on both sides.”
One sour note for Winnipeg came in the bottom of the fourth, when starting third baseman Amos Ramon left the game with a strained knee after running down a RedHawk for an out. He would test the knee in the next inning while on deck, but ultimately left the game with too much pain. His official status will be known Friday.

The second game in this season-opening four-game series between Winnipeg and Fargo goes Friday night at Shaw Park.
