Bats Come Alive As RedHawks Shut Out Gary 8-0

05/21/2011 10:59 PM -
The force was with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Sci-Fi Night at U. S. Steel Yard Saturday night as the RedHawks handed the Gary SouthShore RailCats an 8-0 loss.

Fargo-Moorhead (3-6), jumped out to an early lead and never looked back pounding out 15 hits in the contest and held the RailCats to just five hits. The heart of the RedHawks order recovering strikingly from the night before accounting for 11 of the 15 hits against ‘Cats pitchers. Despite walking five, RedHawks starter Zach Ward had a very strong outing holding the home team scoreless over his seven plus innings of work and allowing just four hits.

The RedHawks got to Shaw early collecting eight hits in the first two innings and plating four runs in the second. In the frame, the visitors scored on a sacrifice fly by Brian Ruggiano, an RBI double from Mike Coles and a two-RBI double off the bat of Nic Jackson. Fargo would add another tally in the third on an RBI double from outfielder Jason James.

The RailCats biggest run scoring threat came in the eighth inning as the ‘Cats managed to load the bases with nobody out. However, 2010 Northern League Reliever of the Year Casey Hoorelbeke managed to strand all three ‘Cats base runners he inherited, as it was evident tonight simply belonged to the visitors.

Phil Britton stretched the RedHawks lead to eight and put to rest hopes of a RailCats ninth inning rally by belting a three run homer to left in the top of the ninth inning.

Brad Boyer and Adam Klein each reached base three times for the ‘Cats as the two combined to draw five walks from RedHawks pitchers. RailCats starter Scott Shaw falls to 1-1 after allowing five earned runs over his five innings of work. Reliable reliever Will Krout gave another strong effort for the RailCats allowing just two hits while striking out a pair in his three innings of scoreless relief.
