The Florida Marlins have purchased the contract of RHP Alex Caldera from the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Caldera has been assigned to the Jupiter Hammerheads, the Marlins affiliate in the Florida State League (High-A).
Caldera was 7-3 with a 3.07 ERA and two saves in 18 games (ten starts) for Fargo-Moorhead in 2011. He was fifth in the American Association in ERA. Caldera pitched 73.1 inning and allowed 35 runs (25 earned) on just 60 hits. He struck out 66 batters and opponents were hitting just .224 against him.
Caldera joined the RedHawks this spring after being released by the Washington Nationals. He pitched in three games for Potomac of the Carolina League (High-A) and was 0-1 with a 16.71 ERA. Caldera began his professional career in 2007 after the Kansas City Royals selected him in the 13th round of the draft. He advanced to Double-A with the Royals in 2010.
Caldera is the 54th player in RedHawks history to have his contract sold to a Major League organization.
