Five-Run Rally Leads to 8-5 RedHawks Win

08/12/2011 11:09 PM -
FARGO, N.D. – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (34-49) used a five-run sixth inning to beat the St. Paul Saints (48-35) 8-5 on Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND.
Fargo-Moorhead used Jesse Hoorelbeke’s third home-run in the past five games as a catalyst in the sixth inning. The RedHawks jumped out to a 8-4 lead and coasted to victory. Hoorelbeke is now just two home runs shy of setting a new RedHawks career home run record. Darryl Motley holds the current record at 64 and Hoorelbeke is now at 63.
After waiting out a 1:57 rain delay prior to the start of the game, the RedHawks wasted no time getting on the board and breaking their 21 inning scoreless streak. Zach Penprase led off with a single and a stolen base. C.J. Retherford followed with a double down the left field line to score Penprase. Retherford advanced and scored on a pair of ground ball outs to give Fargo-Moorhead a 2-0 lead.
St. Paul put up three runs in the third inning to gain their first lead of the game. A single by the Saints’ newest acquisition, Aharon Eggleston, and two walks loaded the bases with no outs. A groundout by Argelis Nunez and a double by Ronnie Bourquin cleared the bases to make the score 3-2.
Todd Jennings’ third double of the year allowed the RedHawks to tie the game at three in the bottom of the third inning. Jennings moved to third on a groundball by Retherford before scoring on a single by Nic Jackson.
That would remain the score until the sixth inning. St. Paul added one run to their total when Jonathan Van Every knocked in Bourquin with an RBI double to the left-center gap. The RedHawks responded immediately as Hoorelbeke started the inning with a home run off the Dakota Magic poker chip in right-center. The rest of the order followed suit as the RedHawks plated five runs to regain the lead 8-4.
Kevin Fuqua came in relief for Jake Laber, who pitched six innings while allowing four runs (all earned) on seven hits. The Saints turned a leadoff double into their fifth run of the game to break up Fuqua’s streak of seven games and twelve innings without allowing an earned run. Fuqua turned the game over to Donnie Smith in the ninth inning, and he was able to earn his team leading fifth save of the year.
Laber (9-6) picked up his ninth win of the year. Matt Long (6-9) gave up all eight runs (all earned) for the Saints on his way to his ninth loss on the season.
Jennings was 3-for-4 on the night with two runs scored. Penprase picked up two key RBI with a double as a part of the sixth inning rally and was 2-for-4 with a run scored as well.
The RedHawks will play their second game against the St. Paul Saints in their three-game series on Saturday night. Game time is 7:02 pm. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 701-235-6161, online at www.fmredhawks.com, or at the Ticket Office during business hours.
