RedHawks Fall to Kansas City 8-3

06/06/2012 9:30 PM -

Kansas City scored a combined five runs in the first and second innings and starter Matt Mitchell pitched 7 1/3 innings in an 8-3 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in front of a crowd of 3,272 at Newman Outdoor Field on Wednesday, June 06, 2012.

RedHawks starter Alex Caldera struggled early allowing the first three T-Bones batters to get on base. Caldera was able to strikeout the next two batters but with two outs, Devin Goodwin hit a line-drive under the glove of RedHawks third baseman Enrique Cruz to allow Gus Milner and Brandon Jones to score and give the T-Bones a 2-0 lead.

Kansas City would extend the lead to 5-0 in the second. In another bases loaded jam, Jones would be walked by Caldera for the first run of the inning. The second run scored after a double-play turned by Enrique Cruz and the third run scored on a single by Trevor Coleman to left.

The RedHawks would gain ground on the T-Bones in the fourth. Cruz hit an RBI double to score Penprase to cut the deficit to 5-1. Todd Jennings hit the next RBI on a ball just under the glove of T-Bones shortstop Jose Duran that scored Cruz from third and made it a 5-2 ballgame.

Kansas City came back in the fifth to match the RedHawks with two more runs of their own. Singles by Trevor Coleman and Goodwin began the inning and both would later score after a single through the right side by Justin Bass and a Sacrifice Fly by Duran to stretch the lead to 7-2 and pull the game out of Fargo-Moorhead’s reach.

Matt Mitchell gave up only one hit through three innings to Fargo-Moorhead before the RedHawks bats would come alive. Mitchell improved his record to 2-2 on the season, giving up three earned runs on eight hits, two walks, and striking out four batters in 7 1/3 innings.

T-Bones catcher Trevor Coleman lead the team batting 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Kala Ka’aihue, Goodwin, and Bass had two hits apiece.

RedHawks starter Alex Caldera pitched five innings giving up eight hits on three walks with five strikeouts. He gave up seven runs but two of the T-Bones runs were earned. His record drops to 3-1.

Jennings led Fargo-Moorhead at the plate going 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Five other RedHawks had hits in the game.

Fargo-Moorhead and Kansas City finish up their four-game series at Newman Outdoor Field tomorrow night at 7:02 p.m.
