The two teams atop the North Division standings meet at Newman Outdoor Field Tuesday, as the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks host the St. Paul Saints at 7:02 p.m. for the first time in 2013. The RedHawks are two wins away from reaching 1,000 in club history and look to achieve the mark during the six-game homestand this week. Fargo-Moorhead won three out of four in Sioux City during the recent road trip and has won eight of its last 11. St. Paul will try to cut into the RedHawks’ 5.5 game lead in the division standings starting today, as Saints’ Anthony Claggett (6-2, 3.34) is expected to take the mound against Fargo-Moorhead’s Paul Burnside (5-5, 5.09).
St. Paul enters tonight’s game second in the North standings and recently split a four-game series against Grand Prairie. George Tsamis is in his 11th season managing the Saints and led the club to a championship in 2004. In the first series between the Saints and ‘Hawks in June, the Saints took two of three, including a walk-off win on June 11 on a home run by Brad Boyer. St. Paul has the edge in recent years, with the RedHawks going 5-8 in 2011 and 4-9 in 2012 against St. Paul. Fargo-Moorhead has an all-time record of 71-66 over St. Paul. Both teams competed against one another in the Northern League, but didn’t match up from 2006-2010 when St. Paul moved to the American Association.
The RedHawks radio home is The Fan 740 AM. Scott Miller serves as the voice of the RedHawks for his eighth season. Pregame starts 20 minutes before the scheduled first pitch. A free online stream of every Fargo-Moorhead home game is available at livestream.com/fmredhawks.
Win No. 1,000 in Sight
The RedHawks need two more wins to reach 1,000 in franchise history. The ‘Hawks have six games to achieve the feat at home, with three-game series’ against St. Paul and Sioux City. Overall, Fargo-Moorhead is 16-11 at home this season including its most recent home series being a three-game sweep of Sioux Falls from July 15-17.
Pitchers’ Continued Success
With the second-best ERA as a team (3.35), the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have been led by their pitching staff this season. Starting pitchers Taylor Stanton and Jake Laber rank in the league’s Top 10 in ERA, while Alex Caldera and reliever Joe Harris are tied for the league lead in wins with eight. Five pitchers have under-3.00 ERA’s, while only three in the rotation have ERA’s over 4.00.
Bourquin Takes On Former Team
Ron Bourquin will take on his former team -- the St. Paul Saints -- for the second time this season and the first at Newman Outdoor Field. Bourquin played two seasons for the Saints, hitting a combined .291 with 23 home runs and 104 RBIs. Bourquin had a tough-go in the prior three games against St. Paul at Midway Stadium in June, going 1-for-12 with six strikeouts. Bourquin is second on the ‘Hawks hitting .293.
Jackson Shines Despite Streak Ending
Although Nic Jackson’s consecutive game-on base streak ended at 36 in a July 18 game at Sioux City, Jackson continues to be the ‘Hawks’ best hitter this month. In 19 July games, he has went 15-for-26 (.382) with four doubles and 18 RBIs. Jackson also became the club’s all-time RBIs leader -- now with 370 total -- with 2 RBIs in the July 21 game in Sioux City. He passed Ruben Salazar, who had 369 and played from 2003-2009.
