Saints Trounce RedHawks 11-1

07/31/2013 8:25 AM -

The last time Mark Hamburger pitched against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks five days ago, it was a tight ballgame heading into the bottom of the ninth.  The Saints committed two errors and lost as Hamburger got the complete game in a losing effort.  On Tuesday night in front of 5,015 Hamburger got a ton of run support and could relax over the last couple of innings as the Saints cruised to an 11-1 victory.

For once in a game that Hamburger pitched the offense may have overshadowed him as the Saints earned their largest margin of victory this season.  With the game scoreless in the third Brad Boyer singled.  With one out Brandon Tripp doubled him home to make it 1-0 Saints.  Ole Sheldon’s single off the glove of the diving shortstop Zach Penprase scored Tripp to make it 2-0.  Sheldon advanced to second on Penprase’s throwing error home.  Jose Hernandez’ RBI double made it 3-0.

In the fourth the Saints pretty much put the game away for Hamburger.  Dan Kaczrowski led off with a single and then the Saints collected five straight two-out hits.  Boyer singled home Kaczrowski to make it 4-0 Saints.  Boyer finished the night 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.  Willie Cabrera’s single moved Boyer to second and the two moved up on a wild pitch.  Tripp knocked them both home with a two-run single to give the Saints a 6-0 lead.  Tripp finished the night 2-3 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.  Sheldon then crushed one over the left field wall, his sixth of the season, to give the Saints an 8-0 lead.  Sheldon finished the night 2-3 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored.

That was more than enough offense for Hamburger who retired 10 in a row from the end of the first until the beginning of the fifth.  He gave up his lone run in the fifth inning, but went 6.2 innings allowing the one run on three hits while walking three and striking out five as he picked up his fifth win of the season.

The same two teams meet in the second game of the three game series on Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium.  The Saints send RHP Mike Koons (2-0, 5.14) to the mound against RedHawks RHP Taylor Stanton (5-3, 2.62).
