Big First Inning, Stanton Carry RedHawks to 3-1 Win

07/31/2013 4:07 PM -

The St. Paul Saints found out why Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks starter Taylor Stanton has the second lowest ERA in the American Association. They managed a season low four hits as three first inning runs were enough to do in the Saints in a 3-1 loss on Wednesday afternoon in front of 5,008.

Stanton, who entered the game with a 2.62 ERA, which is first among all active pitchers in the league and second for those who qualify for the ERA lead, gave up a two-out first inning single to Brad Boyer.  That would be the lone hit for the Saints until the sixth inning.  The Saints managed just one runner in that time, a two out walk to Adam Frost in the third.  Frost singled with one out in the sixth, stole second and moved to third on a ground out by Joey Becker.  Stanton, however, got Boyer to line out to center to end the inning.

The Saints finally got to Stanton in the seventh when Willie Cabrera hit a solo homer to left-center, his 11th of the season.  With one out Ole Sheldon singled to left, but that would be the last hit collected by the Saints.  The four hits were a season low for a nine inning game.  They collected four hits in game two of a double header (scheduled for seven innings) on May 30 at Trois Rivieres.  Stanton went 7.0 innings allowing one run on four hits while walking one and striking out five.

Saints starter Mike Koons matched Stanton pitch-for-pitch in his 6.0 innings of work with the exception of the first.  Koons walked the leadoff man Zach Penprase.  He stole second and moved to third on the throwing error by catcher Dwight Childs.  With one out the RedHawks put together three consecutive RBI doubles by Nic Jackson, C.J. Retherford and Keith Brachold.  That was enough for the RedHawks on Wednesday afternoon.  Mehlich went 6.0 innings allowing three runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out one.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series on Thursday evening at Midway Stadium at 7:05 p.m.  The Saints send RHP Billy Soule (1-0, 8.00) to the mound against RedHawks RHP Alex Caldera (8-3, 3.64).
