The Series
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and Gary SouthShore RailCats begin the 2013 American Association Semifinals Wednesday at 7:02 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field. The RedHawks are set to host the first two games of the best-of-five series, with the RailCats hosting the next three games if necessary. Fargo-Moorhead won its second consecutive North Division title and is making its second playoff appearance as an American Association member. The RedHawks were swept in three games in the semifinals last season against the eventual American Association-champion Winnipeg Goldeyes. The RailCats are making their first American Assocation playoff appearance and first postseason appearance since 2010. Fargo-Moorhead will send American Association Pitcher of the Year Taylor Stanton to the mound in game one, while the RailCats will counter with the lefty 12-game winner Alain Quijano.

The Opponent
The RedHawks dropped two of three against the RailCats at home in June, but split a four-game series in Gary, Ind., to finish the regular season 3-4 against Gary SouthShore. Overall, the ‘Hawks hold an 89-36 advantage over the RailCats in the regular season all-time. Fargo-Moorhead is 11-5 against Gary SouthShore all-time in postseason play, defeating the RailCats in the Northern League Championship in 2006, 2009 and 2010. Gary SouthShore has won two league championships as a member of the Northern League, the first in 2005 against Fargo-Moorhead and in 2007 against Calgary.

Back-to-Back Titles
Fargo-Moorhead clinched the North Division title and an automatic berth in the 2013 American Association playoffs with an 11-7 victory over the Amarillo Sox Tuesday, Aug. 27, at Newman Outdoor Field. In their third year as a member of the American Association, the RedHawks have now won the North Division title in back-to-back years after finishing the 2011 season with a 44-56 record and out of the postseason picture.

Time For Redemption
The RedHawks look to redeem themselves after being swept in the semifinals last season by the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Fargo-Moorhead dropped the best-of-five series despite having strong pitching performances from pitchers Tyler Herron and Alex Caldera. Each home game at Newman Outdoor Field was decided by two runs and the Goldeyes sealed the three-game sweep with a three-run victory over the ‘Hawks in Winnipeg at Shaw Park. The Goldeyes would go on to win the American Association title, their first league championship since 1994.

Penprase Among RedHawks’ Best
Zach Penprase scored his 454th run against the Amarillo Sox Thursday, Aug. 29, and in doing so became the RedHawks’ all-time runs scored leader passing Joe Mathis who had 453 runs. Penprase has made a habit of breaking club records. He came into the season already as the club’s stolen-base leader, but broke the base on balls record earlier this year and also the games played record in an August series at Sioux Falls. He holds the most active records, with Nic Jackson tied for first in home runs and in sole possession of the RBI record.

Stanton Starts it Off For The ‘Hawks
Taylor Stanton will take the mound for Fargo-Moorhead in game one of the American Association Semifinals. Stanton has served as the ace of the RedHawks’ pitching staff this season. He was named the 2013 American Association Pitcher of the Year by the league’s managers and media members. Stanton finished the season 9-4 with a 2.43 ERA.In addition to leading the league in ERA, Stanton is tied for second with three complete games this season, including one shutout.  He posted quality starts in 15 of his 18 games this season. Stanton is in his first season with Fargo-Moorhead.  He pitched the previous five seasons in the Seattle Mariners organization.  Stanton reached the Double-A level with the Mariners in both the 2011 and 2012 seasons.  He was selected by the Mariners in the 26 th round of the 2008 draft out of Diablo Valley (CA) College.
