Controversial Calls and Two Home Runs by Wichita Lead to RedHawks’ Loss 4-3

08/06/2014 11:05 PM -

Jake Laber was again unable to tie the franchise win record, after giving up two home runs in his seven innings on the mound in a game that saw Doug Simunic and Petey Paramore ejected after controversial calls on Wednesday night at Newman Outdoor Field in front of 3,952 fans in attendance.

First run of the ballgame came right away in the top of the first with the second batsman stepping into the batter’s box. In the number 2 spot was Jake Kahaulelio, who got a piece of Jake Laber’s 1-2 pitch and belted a solo home run, that barely cleared stayed fair, as it hooked around the foul pole in the left field.

In the top of the third, the Wingnuts doubled up the score, with David Amberson getting on second with a double to the right field. From that point, it was easy for Kahaulelio to collect his second RBI of the game with an RBI single.

The RedHawks would cut the lead in half in the bottom of that inning. With one man out, Ronnie Bourquin lifted a high fly ball, and right fielder David Amberson had no play on. After the ball bounced off the wall, Bourquin was able to trot to third base for a triple. C.J. Retherford was the man to send him home with a base hit, lowering the Wichita lead to 2-1.

For the next three completed innings, either of the teams were able to pose any threat their opponent, with Wichita getting one hit and a walk, and the ‘Hawks would post the same numbers in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

It wasn’t till the bottom of the seventh, when RedHawks took care of the lead change. With two outs and two on, Retherford was the first batter facing newly subbed Daniel Bennett. After seeing two pitches, he was able to squeeze a double right past the third baseman, plating both Bourquin and Nic Jackson for a 3-2 lead after seven completed innings.

Fargo-Moorhead’s lead did not last more than half an inning, as the visiting Wichita Wingnuts, in front of 3,952. After a controversial call that saw RedHawks’ manager Doug Simunic ejected, the ‘Nuts got a single From Kahaulelio, and one swing by David Espinoza meant a two run home run and a change of the score to 4-3 in Wichita’s favor.

With the RedHawks losing the game and moving to a seven game losing streak, Jake Laber got the loss (6-9), while Daniel Bennett got the win (4-0). Alex Hinshaw picked up his 2nd save on the year.
