RedHawks Top Flyers 7-5

07/26/2009 3:30 PM -
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks won the Sunday matinee rubber-match game 7-5 against the Schaumburg Flyers in front of 3,007 fans at Newman Outdoor Field. The RedHawks improve to 33-27 and the Flyers fall to 28-34.  The victory gave the RedHawks an 8-2 mark to end their season-long ten-game homestand.

A pitcher’s duel through three, Flyers 3B Vince Harrison and RF Victor Ferrante teamed-up for a pair of singles to lead-off the fourth. C Richard Mercado doubled Harrison home and DH Craig Maddox cued a ball to second to score Ferrante from third and make it 2-0 Flyers.

Fargo-Moorhead responded in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. RedHawks SS Zach Penprase drew a walk and reached third on CF Nic Jackson’s 19th single in the last 11 games. 3B Jeremiah Piepkorn reached on a fielder’s choice and the RedHawks benefited from a passed ball. 1B Randall Simon lifted a sac fly to score Jackson from third and DH Ruben Salazar tied it at two with his first RBI single of the season.

C Alan Rick poked a one-out double to the gap in left and RF Mike Coles singled home the go-ahead run to give the RedHawks a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning. In the sixth, Simon cracked his seventh home run of the season to double the RedHawks lead to 4-2. The RedHawks benefited from an error and padded their lead with a pair of RBI singles from Simon and Penprase for a 7-2 lead.

In their last at bats, Ferrante hit his team-leading 11th home run of the season and substitute 2B Jose Valdez hit a two-run big fly, but the Flyers rally fell short.

RedHawks starter LHP Broc Coffman (7-4) pitched 5.0 innings, gave-up two runs (all earned) on four hits for his seventh win of the season. Flyers starter RHP Edwin Almonte (4-8) pitched 5.0 innings, gave-up four runs (all earned) and loses his eighth game of the season.

The Schaumburg leg of this six-game series kicks off at Alexian Field July 28th – July 30th. RedHawks RHP Garry Bakker (4-3, 5.45) and RHP Nick Fellman (2-5, 5.18) will get the ball in the doubleheader. The tentative game-one starter for the Flyers is RHP Tom Lyons (2-4, 5.31).
