Herron Turns in Another Good Start, No Run Support in 6-2 Loss

FARGO, ND – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks held a lead early on, but couldn't contain the potent offense of the St. Paul Saints and lost 6-2 on Sunday afternoon.

The game was scoreless and seemed to be a pitcher's duel up until the third when a scary scene occurred. With two outs int the top half of the third, Steve Nikorak was at the plate. He took a Tyler Herron curveball that did not break to the left side of his face and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The RedHawks struck first in the third. Drew Muren began the inning with a leadoff walk and proceeded to steal second. He was then advanced to third on an opposite field single from Zach Penprase, who made his first start of the series today after missing the last three games nursing a series of eight stitches in his lower leg. Chad Mozingo stepped up next and grounded into a fielder's choice, but he drove in Muren in the process giving Fargo-Moorhead the 1-0 lead.

Tyler Herron took the hill for Fargo-Moorhead in front of 3,274 strong at Newman Outdoor Field and turned in another good outing. In his last 26 innings, Herron had given up five runs (four earned) and struck out 20 while only surrendering three walks. He put up similar numbers on Sunday, going 6.2 innings allowing four runs (all earned) on eight hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. Herron's nine fanned Saints matches a team high and a personal high for the season, and is the third time he has recorded nine strikeouts this season.

St. Paul finally got to Herron in the fifth. RedHawk killer Mike Kvasnicka reached on a single as did Anthony Phillips to start the inning. Mitch Elliot would later drive them both in on a two-out single to right field giving St. Paul a 2-1 advantage. The RedHawks would answer in the home half of the inning. Joe Dunigan lead off with a double to right for starters. Later in the frame Penprase stepped to the dish and delivered with an RBI double to right-center scoring Dunigan making it a 4-2 game.

The Saints would add two more in the seventh. Robert Coe, who was the losing pitcher in Thursday night's 1-0 game, subbed in for Nikorak and made his first professional at-bat. Coe made it count, as he slapped an opposite field single to right driving in Anthony Phillips. It was Coe's first professional hit and RBI, and it would turn out to be the go-ahead run in the game.

St. Paul would add some insurance runs in the ninth. Mike Kvansicka would belt a two-run shot down the line in right giving St. Paul a 6-2 lead. Mike Zouzalik retired the RedHawks in order in the bottom of the ninth ending the game.

Despite the strong start, Tyler Herron (2-4) took the loss for Fargo-Moorhead, while Jeff Shields improved to a perfect 6-0, and is now tied for the American Association lead in wins with teammate Kramer Sneed. The RedHawks drop to 10-27 while St. Paul marches on to 29-7. The team will take tomorrow off before traveling to Gary Southshore for a three game set with the Railcats. The RedHawks will then spend 4th of July weekend in the Twin Cities as they take on St. Paul before returning to Fargo-Moorhead.
