RedHawks Rally On Independence Day

ST. PAUL, MN – Fueled by a three-run Joe Bonfe homer in the eighth inning, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks stormed back from a four run deficit and defeated the St. Paul Saints 8-7 in 11 innings in front of 9,960 fans at CHS Field on the 4th of July in St. Paul.

Tyler Herron started on the hill for the RedHawks. He gave up six runs on nine hits with a pair of walks and eight strikeouts.  Herron made quick work of the first three frames, but ran into a buzz-saw in the fourth inning. Ian Gac lead off with a single and former RedHawk Ronnie Bourquin walked his way on bringing Anthony Phillips to the plate. With two outs, Anthony Phillips belted a three run homer giving the Saints a 3-0 lead. Dan Kaczrowski followed with a home run of his own, making it back-to-back home runs and making it 4-0 St. Paul.

The RedHawks would respond in the sixth inning. Through five innings, Saints’ starter Jeff Shields had only allowed one base runner, a Joe Bonfe double in the second.  Anthony Renz began with a leadoff walk, followed by a Frank Salerno bloop single to left. Drew Muren would poke a single up the middle loading the bases for Zach Penprase. Penprase would hit a dribbler to Saints shortstop Phillips who would zip to first, but not in time as he reached on an RBI infield single. Chad Mozingo would then reach on a fielder’s choice scoring Frank Salerno. Joe Bonfe stepped up next knocking an RBI single scoring Muren. The RedHawks would tie the game with a Joe Staley single to center scoring Mozingo and tying the game 4-4.

Joe Bonfe would answer the bell again in the eighth. Facing a 2-2 count with runners on second and third, Bonfe sent a moon ball over the fence in left field giving the RedHawks a 7-6 lead in the 8th.

Willie Argo stepped up in the home half of the 8th and delivered. He took the first offering he saw from Mike Noteware and sent it into the masses standing in left field and tying the game 7-7.

Ty Kelley came on and faced the minimum in the ninth to send the game to extras. Neither team would score in the first bonus frame, as Kelley came in and closed it down again in the tenth.

The International Rule came into play per league rules in the 11th, and Joe Bonfe started on second. Joe Dunigan lined a base hit into center field and Manager Doug Simunic sent Bonfe home. Center-fielder Alonzo Harris fired a ball on a line to home plate and Bonfe slid around the tag from Vinny DiFazio making it 8-7. Saints Manager George Tsamis and DiFazio both went after home plate umpire Andre Lanoue, with Tsamis eventually being ejected.

Mike Nesseth came on to close it out in the ninth and did so earning his fourth save of  the season. Ty Kelley earned his first win of the season and is now 1-5, while Mike Mehlich (0-2) took the loss for St. Paul. The two teams will finish up their three game set with a 5:05 first pitch time on Sunday afternoon.
