Herron Dazzles as 'Hawks Route Gary 12-3

FARGO, ND – Tyler Herron seemed to struggle early on, but the right-hander settled down and dominated the game from the third inning on as the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks cruised to a 12-3 win in the series rubber match with the Gary Soutshore RailCats with 3,460 looking on at Newman Outdoor Field.

Herron looked erratic to start as the RailCats got a pair of runs on an RBI single from Elbert Devarie after he walked the 6-7-8 men in the RailCats order consecutively making it 2-0.

The RedHawks would explode offenseively in the second. They would score five runs as Luke Bailey, Michael Wing and Ryan Pineda all had RBI singles in the frame and they took a commanding 5-2 lead.

Fargo-Moorhead would score three more in the third. Joe Dunigan singled extending his hitting streak to 14 games to lead off the frame and then he score on a throwing error on a Luke Bailey single bringing Charlie Valerio to the dish. Valerio took the first offering from Gary starter Travis McGee and lifted it into 30 mile per hour winds blowing high above the field. The ball drifted and continued to go until it wound up on the other side of the fence in right-center for Valerio's fifth homer of the season making it 8-3 'Hawks.

Gary would tack on a run in the third on a sac fly from Dustin Geiger to right to making it 5-3 but from there it was the Tyler Herron show. Herron retired 12 straight RailCats before yielding a single to Elbert Devarie in the seventh. He proceeded to retire the next five batters after, but gave way to Alex Kreis for the ninth inning after hurling 137 pitches, 88 of them for strikes.

Herron found command of his looping curve ball as the game went along. He baffled RailCat after RailCat en route to recording a season high 12 strikeouts in eight innings of work. The 12 punch outs ties the league high for strikeouts in a single game with teammate Brandon Mann, who has sat down 12 men via the strikeout twice this season. Herron now has 108 K's on the year, good for third in the American Association.

Post-game Herron talked about getting his curveball working as the game wore on saying, “The umpire was squeezing me early on but Bailey and I got working in a good rhythm. Working really fast and the curveball just did it's thing.”

The 'Hawks would score a run in the fifth on a Joe Dunigan line drive home run to right and would tack on three more in the sixth for good measure but coasted from there.

Herron (6-6) earns the win while Gary starter Travis McGee (2-1) took the loss going 5.1 innings while giving up 12 runs (11 earned) on ten hits with five walks and six strikeouts.

All but one RedHawks' starter, Zach Penprase, had a hit in the game and five 'Hawks had multi-hit games. Joe Dunigan continued his torrid hitting, going 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and a pair of RBIs, including the homer, in the win. He is in the midst of a 14 game hit streak in which he is batting .399 with 10 runs scored and 13 RBIs.

With the win the RedHawks improve to 35-51 while winning their fifth consecutive series. Fargo-Moorhead has been one of the hottest teams in the league as of late, having won 12 of the last 15 games. Gary drops to 41-45 with the loss and are now five games behind Laredo in the wild card chase.

The RedHawks hit the road tomorrow for a three game series with the Sioux Falls Canaries. Ty Kelley (4-6, 4.59 ERA) takes the hill in the opener tomorrow night at 7:05. Pre-game starts on 740 AM The Fan at 6:45 p.m with Scott Miller behind the microphone.
