The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks swept a doubleheader against the Winnipeg Goldeyes Tuesday night, winning 7-5 and 11-0 at Canwest Park in Winnipeg, MB.
In game one, Winnipeg opened the scoring off Nick Fellman in the third. Dustin Richardson drew a lead-off walk and went to third on a Cory Patton single. Both scored on a one-out double by Juan Diaz. The hosts added to their lead in the fourth when Vince Harrison homered to start the inning in his Goldeyes debut. Mark Minicozzi followed with a grounder to third baseman Jeremiah Piepkorn, who threw it away, allowing him to go to second. He went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Zach Penprase error.
Blanked through six by Andrew Cruse while held to just five singles, the RedHawks made a game of it in the seventh. After walking Carlo Cota and Alan Rick, Cruse was lifted for Jordan Stewart, who gave up a single to Mike Coles to load the bases and a single to Penprase to make it 1-0. With the bases still loaded, Nic Jackson hit a sacrifice fly to score Rick and it was 5-2. Coles tagged and went to third on the play, Stewart was given the hook and Chris Homer came in. Donzell McDonald hit a ball that Adam Frost misplayed at short, allowing Coles to score and it was 5-3. Ruben Salazar singled to score Penprase before Piepkorn hammered one to left to make it 7-5 and complete the come back.
Fellman (6-5) picked up the win, allowing all five runs (two earned) on four hits in six innings, walking five and fanning three. Homer (1-3) took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Tim Lavigne tossed a shutout ninth for his first save.
In the second game, Fargo-Moorhead opened the scoring off Zach Baldwin in the first. Mike Coles laid down a perfect bunt to start the game and ended up at second when Baldwin's flip to get him missed first baseman Cody Ehlers. Coles stole third and scored on a Zach Penprase double. It became 3-0 in the third. With one out, Nic Jackson doubled and Donzell McDonald was hit by a pitch. With two out, Jeremiah Piepkorn grounded one to shortstop Mark Minicozzi, who threw perfectly to get McDonald at second. The ball hit Brent Metheny's glove and rolled into right field, allowing Jackson and McDonald to score.
The visitors added to their lead in the fourth. Jeff Stevens drew a lead-off walk but was erased at second when Coles hit into a fielder's choice. Cole stole second, Penprase walked and both moved up when Jackson grounded out. McDonald hit a high fly for what should have been the third out but Metheny dropped the ball as Coles and Penprase scored. Ruben Salazar singled to score McDonald and it was 6-0.
With Matt Davis in for Baldwin, the RedHawks made it 7-0 in the sixth. And with Kurt Crowell in for Davis and then Kevin West in for Crowell, the RedHawks tacked on four more runs in the seventh.
