RedHawks Move Into First Place With 4-2 Win Over Gary

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks won a pitcher’s duel Friday night for sole-possession of first-place in the Northern League with a 4-2 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats in front of a sellout crowd of 4,918 fans at Newman Outdoor Field.

RedHawks starter LHP Jeff Icenogle pitched 6.1 innings and gave-up two runs (all earned) for the no-decision. RedHawks reliever LHP Jeremy Hauer pitched 1.2 innings for his first win of the season. RailCats starter southpaw Tony Cogan pitched 7.2 innings, gave-up four runs (all earned) and rung-up 10 RedHawks, but suffered the loss.

In the top of the first inning, RailCats DH Mike Massaro drew a walk and reached second on a wild pitch by Icenogle. 2B Eric McNamee’s fly-out pushed Massaro to third and SS Jay Pecci singled him home to open the scoring.

In the third inning, RedHawks LF Justin Justice singled to the right-field gap and rounded the horn on an RBI double by RF Mike Coles. With the game tied at one, Cogan grazed RedHawks DH Donzell McDonald. McDonald nabbed second to get into scoring position. With the go-ahead run at second, 3B Jeremiah Piepkorn singled him home to make it 2-1 RedHawks.

In the seventh, the RedHawks lifted Icenogle in favor of RHP T.J. Stanton. But the RailCats rallied to tie the game. C Anthony Esquer doubled to the left-field alleyway, LF Jordan Czarniecki worked a walk and CF Rob Marconi hit an RBI seeing-eye-single to tie it at two all.

RedHawks RF Mike Coles cracked his second double of the game to leadoff the eighth. DH Donzell McDonald blooped an RBI single on Cogan’s 130th pitch of the game to give the RedHawks a 3-2 lead. 3B Jeremiah Piepkorn singled McDonald home for a two-run cushion headed into the ninth. RedHawks closer RHP Tim Lavigne pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season.

The RedHawks and RailCats play tomorrow in the halfway mark of this three-game series. RHP Derell McCall (5-0, 2.13) will get the ball for the RailCats. LHP Broc Coffman (9-5, 5.29) will toe the rubber for the RedHawks. Game time is 7:02 p.m.
