RedHawks Pull Away Late in Win over Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (51-37) fell 11-7 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Shaw Park on Tuesday night.

Dustin Geiger hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to give the RedHawks a 7-5 lead they would hold through the end of the game.  Geiger was set up by a Josh Mazzola single and a KD Kang double with one out.

Mike Gilmartin and Ryan Pineda each hit solo homers in the top of the eighth, while Kes Carter hit a two-out, two-run double in the ninth to make it 11-5.

The Goldeyes scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth on two-out, RBI singles from Wes Darvill and Ridge Hoopii-Haslam to cut the RedHawks lead to 11-7.  Patrick Mincey (3-2) eventually recorded the final out, completing five innings of long relief to earn the win.

The Goldeyes took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on back-to-back doubles from Maikol Gonzalez and Adam HeislerCasio Grider extended the lead to 2-0 with a two-out, RBI single to left in the bottom of the second.

Fargo-Moorhead took its first lead of the night with a three-run top of the third.  Carter tied the game with a two-run home run to right-centre.  Two batters later, Keury de la Cruz hit a solo shot on a line drive to left.

The Goldeyes regained the lead with three in the fourth.  Singles from Darvill and Hoopii-Haslam opened the inning.  After Tanner Murphy laid down a sacrifice bunt, Grider ripped a single through the left side to score both Darvill and Hoopii-Haslam.  Grider took second on the throw to the plate, stole third base, and eventually scored on Heisler’s high chopper in front of the mound.

The RedHawks trimmed the lead to 5-4 in the top of the fifth on Carter’s second homer of the night.  Gilmartin knotted the score with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Mikey O’Brien started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in five-plus innings.  O’Brien walked one and struck out four.

Will Solomon started for the RedHawks and also took a no-decision, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits four-plus innings.  Solomon walked three and struck out two.

Victor Capellan (2-2) took the loss in relief for the Goldeyes.

Grider, Josh Romanski, David Rohm, Darvill, Hoopii-Haslam, and Murphy all had multiple hits in the game.

Cameron McVey worked two-thirds scoreless innings in relief in his first game since August 7th.  McVey was activated from the disabled list prior to Tuesday’s game.  The Goldeyes placed first baseman Jacob Rogers on the disabled list retroactive to August 17th.

Game three of the four-game series is Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.  Ethan Carnes (7-3, 4.47) faces left-hander Tyler Alexander (11-3, 2.86).
