RedHawks Blank Saints For the First Time This Season

ST. PAUL, MN (July 16, 2017) – Mired in the worst slide in three years the St. Paul Saints were blanked for the first time all season.  Managing just six singles, a night after scoring 15 runs, the Saints lost 4-0 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHakws on Sunday evening at CHS Field in front of 8,180.  The loss drops the Saints to 31-24 and they remain tied for first place with the Goldeyes.

Facing Zach Prendergast, who was making just his fourth professional start, but was 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA, the Saints couldn’t manage much against the Seton Hall product.  In the second inning Anthony Gallas singles and Tony Thomas drew a one out walk.  Prendergast got Kes Carter to fly out and Jack Goihl to ground out to end the inning.

In the third the Saints once again got two on, this time with nobody out, as Jon Kristoffersen walked and Tim Colwell singled him to second.  Prendergast struck out Mitch Delfino, got Brady Shoemaker to fly out, and struck out Gallas.

In the fourth the Saints put two on with two outs as Carter and Goihl reached on back-to-back singles, but Prendergast retired Kristoffersen on a line out to right.

The Saints left two more on in the fifth when Delfino singled with one out and Gallas singled with two outs, but Prendergast once again made the right pitch getting Nate Hanson to fly out to end the inning.  That started a string of 11 Saints in a row retired by RedHawks pitchers.  Prendergast went 7.0 shutout innings allowing six hits while walking two and striking out nine.

The only time the Saints had a man reach third was in the ninth.  With one out Carter walked and with two outs Kristoffersen hit a grounder to second baseman Mikey Reynolds.  He couldn’t field the ball cleanly and then his throw to first was wide and went towards the stands allowing Carter to reach third and Kristoffersen went to second.  Colwell, however, would strike out looking to end the game.

Saints starter Benji Waite, who entered play having not allowed an earned run in his last 24.1 innings, extended it to 27.0 innings by not allowing anything in the first 2.2 innings.  In the third with two outs, however, Yhoian Medina singled.  Devan Ahart walked and Keury De La Cruz blooped an RBI single into right scoring Medina, giving the RedHawks a 1-0 lead.  Chris Grayson followed with a two-run double to make it 3-0.

In the sixth Grayson wreaked havoc on the base paths when he singled with one out and stole second and third.  K.D. Kang’s RBI single to center finished the scoring for the RedHawks.  Waite went 8.0 innings allowing four runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out eight.  He recorded six strikeouts in a row from the last two outs of the fourth until the first out of the sixth and recorded seven consecutive outs by way of the strikeout.
