The Streak Ends at 11

WINNIPEG, MB — The Winnipeg Goldeyes (36-29) beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 15-6 at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon.

Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Shawn Pleffner and David Bergin had back-to-back singles to left field, Wes Darvill bunted to advance the bases, and Mason Katz was hit by a Will Solomon pitch. Jordan Ebert hit an RBI single to left field that scored Pleffner, Andrew Sohn hit a single over the head of Brandon Tierney that drove home Bergin and brought David Rohm to the plate. Rohm hit a grand slam to left field, followed by back-to-back home runs by Reggie Abercrombie and Pleffner that gave the Goldeyes the 10-2 lead.

“We have an explosive offence,” said Goldeyes’ right-fielder Rohm. “Once we get the train going it becomes contagious. They had some good pitching performances this series that slowed us down a bit, but we battled that inning and got some key hits that started the hitting.”

Goldeyes’ starting pitcher Kevin McGovern earned the win, allowing seven hits and five earned runs, walking one and striking out six in six innings pitched.

Will Solomon took the loss for the RedHawks, allowing nine hits and 10 earned runs, three walks and striking out two in four innings pitched.

The Goldeyes led off the scoring in the bottom of the first, Rohm walked and scored on a Josh Romanski RBI double to right-centre field.

Trever Adams hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the second, that tied the ballgame at 1-1.

In the top of the third, Devan Ahart singled up the middle and stole second and scored off an Adams double off the left field wall.

The RedHawks battled back in the fifth, Yhoxian Medina singled to left field, Ahart doubled off the left field wall and Adams hit a three-run home run to left field that cut the lead to 10-5.

In the bottom of the fifth, Wes Darvill beat out a throw to first from Brandon Tierney, Katz singled to right field, Ebert reached first on a fielders choice, and Sohn hit an RBI single off of Tierney that drove in Darvill.

In the top of the seventh Ahart singled to right field and scored off a Josh Mazzola single to shallow right field.

The Goldeyes extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh. Darvill reached first off a poor throw by Medina, Katz hit a two-run home run to left field, followed by an Ebert home run to deep centre. Rohm singled to left field, reached second on a balk by pitcher Will Dennis, took third off a Romanski ground-out and scored on a wild pitch that gave the Goldeyes the 15-6 lead.
