RedHawks Split Doubleheader With Rockford

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks split a doubleheader with the Rockford RiverHawks on Tuesday night. The RedHawks dropped the opener 4-1 before winning 12-8 in extra innings in the nightcap.

Jason James homered to right field to give the RiverHawks an insurance run in their 4-1 victory in the opener. In the nightcap, James and Evan McArthur each hit game-tying home runs to send the game to extra innings, but the RedHawks won, 12-8. Fargo first baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke hit three homers in the nightcap, in front of a season-high sellout crowd of 3,761 at Road Ranger Stadium.

Rockford never trailed in the opener. In the second inning, Travis Scott doubled in a run and scored on Jono Brooks’ RBI single. In the third, David Cooper led off with a walk, moved up on a groundout and a flyout and scored a wild pitch by Fargo starter Darren Byrd (0-2).

Carlo Cota homered to center field in the top of the fifth, but James answered with his solo shot in the bottom of the inning.

Rockford starter Roger Lincoln (2-2) struck out five without a walk for the win. He left with one on and one out in the seventh. Scott Roehl struck out the two batters he faced to earn his ninth save.

In the nightcap, Fargo scored four runs in the first inning – two on Hoorelbeke’s home run to left – and never trailed. Hoorelbeke homered with nobody on in the third and sixth innings.

Fargo closer Donnie Smith blew a pair of two-run leads in the late innings. He opened the seventh with a walk and James’ game-tying homer to the right-field beer garden. In the eighth, after a leadoff walk, McArthur tied the game at 8-8 with his first professional homer.

In the top of the ninth inning, Nic Jackson doubled in the go-ahead run off Chris Pfalzgraf (0-2). With one out, Eric Campbell hit a three-run homer to left.

Reliever Adam Tollefson (2-0) retired all four batters he faced to earn the win.
