Early Struggles Cost RedHawks in 6-3 Loss to Gary

FARGO, N.D. – The Gary SouthShore RailCats jumped out to an early three-run lead and held on for a 6-3 victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Newman Outdoor Field in front of 3,596 fans on Wednesday night.

Taylor Stanton worked out of an early jam in the top first, but couldn’t get out of the second inning unschathed.  The bases were loaded after Stanton issued a two-out walk to Craig Madddox and Wally Backman Jr. made Stanton pay, as he roped the first pitch to the left field for a base-clearing double, and the visitors took an early 3-0 lead.

With Fargo-Moorhead unable to find a way to score with bases loaded in both the second and third inning, Gary extended their lead to 6-0 when Danny Pulfer lined a three-run home run to right field in the fourth inning.

The RedHawks’ bats woke up in the bottom of the fourth. Dusty Robinson led the rally off with a single. After Travis Higgs reached on fielder’s choice, Sawyer Carroll singled and Zach Penprase walked. With two away, C.J. Retherford got the ‘Hawks on the board with his two-run single.

Fargo-Moorhead added one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Petey Paramore received a walk from Chuck Fontana, and back-to-back-to-back hits by Erik Castro, Dusty Robinson and Travis Higgs (RBI single) brought the score to 6-3. With that score in the bottom of the ninth frame, James Parr was able to shut the door for the RailCats and earned his second save on the season.

Taylor Stanton takes the loss (2-6), and Morgan Coombs (5-4) gets the win for Gary’s third straight win. The final game of the series is schedule for a business day game tomorrow, July 10, first pitch at 12:30pm. For tickets, call (701) 235-6161 or visit www.fmredhawks.com.
