RedHawks Bats Propel Team to 5-4 Win Over Gary

Five consecutive hits in the sixth inning meant three runs that lead the RedHawks to a 5-4 victory on evening against Gary with 3,880 fans in attendance on Saturday night in Fargo, ND.

Striking first in tonight’s game were the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, in their first time hitting off of Stephen Bougher. Two men were already out, when the ‘Hawks got back-to-back -to-back singles from Nic Jackson, C.J. Retherford and Erik Castro. Castro’s single brought in Jackson for an early 1-0 lead.

Gary SouthShore RailCats could not come up with an answer until the top of the fifth, when they changed the score in their favor. Once again, with two batters out, Drew Muren got a base hit off of a first pitch by Ernst. That started off a back-to-back-to-back-to-back singles by Muren, Danny Pulfer, Drew Martinez (RBI from sending Muren home) and Mitchell (also an RBI for scoring Pulfer), which meant the change in score to 2-1 for Gary.

Top of the next inning, the sixth, meant one more run on the scoreboard for the visiting RailCats. Brian Ernst opened the frame with a lead-off walk to Josh Romanski. Wally Backman’s successful sacrifice bunt moved Romanski to a scoring position, and Muren collected his first RBI of the triumph, 3-1 Gary.

Back-to-back hits came once again, this time for the RedHawks, as they got a string of five back-to-back base hits. Retherford singled, and Castro lifted a double off the wall. With runners on second and third, Petey Paramore’s double scored them both to tie the ballgame at 3 apiece. The hitting did not stop there, as Sawyer Carroll singled, and Brandon Tripp brought in the go-ahead, Paramore.

Unable to find a way to score in the top of the seventh, it was all about the ‘Hawks in the bottom again. Retherford doubled (for his third base hit on the evening) and when Castro sent a ball right past the pitcher Ian Kaddish, which gave Retherford enough time to trot home for the fifth run of the game for Fargo-Moorhead.

Eight inning saw the Gary score one sole run, after Jose Garcia roped a single to center field, and he would later come around to score on an RBI single by Drew Muren (Muren’ third hit and second RBI on the evening).

Tonight’s game turned out better for Nate Garcia, who came in to shut the door in the top of the ninth frame. He earned his sixteenth save on the year, which meant the win went to Brian Ernst (8-4) and the loss to Chuck Fontana (1-1).
