Budkevics’ Gem Highlights Boulders Win Over RedHawks

(POMONA, N.Y.) Starting pitcher Bo Budkevics tossed seven scoreless innings while the offense came up with clutch hits, helping the Rockland Boulders to a 4-1 win over Fargo-Moorhead on Monday night at Provident Bank Park. It was the fourth straight win for Rockland (46-35), a season high for consecutive victories.

Though Budkevics final line was impressive, the beginning was a bit shaky. The RedHawks (38-49) loaded the bases with two outs but got out of the jam unscathed. His offense took that momentum and turned it into an early lead when Matt Nandin singled to open the first and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Jerod Edmondson. Two innings later, a wild pitch from Shawn O’Neill brought Antone DeJesus home and gave Rockland a 2-0 lead after three frames.

It was then that Budkevics settled down, retiring 10 in a row at one point. The most trouble he faced the rest of the way was in the seventh when Fargo-Moorhead put two on with two outs. That threat was quickly squashed when Anthony Kaskadden flew out to left to end the inning. The Boulders tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the home half of the inning thanks to Ryan Stovall’s two-out, two-run double to right that scored both Giuseppe Papaccio and Junior Arrojo.

The RedHawks finally got on the board in the top of the eighth as Nic Jackson belted a solo home run off reliever Shawn Gilblair. Fargo-Moorhead would get nothing else the rest of the way as Chad Robinson retired three in a row in the ninth after issuing a leadoff walk to pick up his ninth save.

Budkevics (2-1) earned the win with seven shutout frames, scattering just three hits and striking out four. It is the second straight start in which the righty did not give up a run, tossing five scoreless at Trois-Rivieres on Aug. 14. The loss was given to O’Neill (0-3) who allowed just two runs in five plus innings of work. The southpaw struck out five batters while issuing three walks and giving up six hits.

Game two of this interleague matchup is on Tues., Aug. 19 with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch at Provident Bank Park.
