It was an inauspicious start for Winnipeg Goldeyes right-hander Coby Cowgill. The pitchers who followed didn’t help much, either.
Cowgill gave up six runs on eight hits over three innings of work and the Goldeyes couldn’t quite muster a comeback, as the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks topped the Fish 13-11 in a pre-season slugfest at Shaw Park on Tuesday night.
Goldeyes third baseman Josh Mazzola hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the eighth, as the Fish came back from a 13-run deficit with seven runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth to make a game of it, but it wasn’t quite enough.
The RedHawks finished with 13 runs on 15 hits, while the Goldeyes had 11 runs on 13 hits. It was a chilly night and not a good one for either pitching staff.
“I thought Coby pitched OK,” said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney, who said he was generally pleased with everybody’s effort. “Coby is a young kid who has five pitches and like a lot of our young pitchers he was just getting his feet wet. He’s got a good arm and he was a little wild in the strike zone, but I think he’ll be all right. He just needs a little time. For the most part, I was happy with everybody tonight.”
Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks clean-up hitter Joe Dunigan ripped a three-run homer in the third inning off Cowgill and then did the same to Benji Waite in the eighth. Dunigan went two-for-five with two homers and six runs batted in.
RedHawks centre fielder Chad Mozingo, the No. 2 hitter in manager Doug Simunic’s lineup, had three doubles, walked twice, scored three runs and drove in two, while Stefan Gartrell, batting out of the three hole, had four singles in five trips, drove in three and scored two as the numbers two, three and four hitters accounted 11 RedHawks runs.
Casey Haerther, who went two-for-five on the evening, drove in a pair of runs for the Goldeyes, but second baseman/shortstop Casio Grider was the most exciting player on the field for Winnipeg. Grider had two singles, plus a bunt single, scored two runs and drove in one with a sacrifice fly as he made a bid to wrap up a middle infielder’s job.
Fargo reliever Josh Wright picked up the victory for the RedHawks, while Cowgill suffered the loss. There was no save.
The Goldeyes and RedHawks will wrap up the pre-season portion of the 2015 schedule at Shaw Park on Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
