Same Song, Different Verse in 3-2 Loss at GaryGARY, IN – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks held a one-run lead for the majority of their series opener with the Gary Southshore RailCats on Tuesday night, but an errant throw and a perfectly hit ball off third base in the eighth doomed the RedHawks as they fell 3-2 in front of 3,784 fans at the U.S. Steel yard
The RedHawks struck right away in the first inning. Zach Penprase belted a double to left-center, then proceed to advance to third by tagging off a deep flyball from Chad Mozingo to right field. Joe Bonfe would step to the dish next ripped a single into left plating Penprase easily from third.
Tyler Alexander was on the hill for the RedHawks. In his second start he allowed just one run (unearned) on five hits with four walks while fanning five in six innings. The lone he allowed came in the third. Ryan Brockett grounded into the 5-4 fielder’s choice scoring Jaime Del Valle tying the game 1-1.
The Penprase-Bonfe connection came alive again in the fifth. Penprase walked to get things started and was advanced to third by Chad Mozingo. Joe Bonfe then ripped his second hit of the night, a single scoring Penprase for the second time allowing Fargo-Moorhead to recapture the lead 2-1. Someway, somehow, Zach Penprase managed to dance around the tag at home. Penprase is not supposed to slide due to his stitched in his leg, and managed to not do so and score anyway.
The wheels fell off the bus in the bottom of the eighth with Mike Noteware on to pitch. J.D. Pulfer lead off the inning with a double and Tillman Pugh would bunt him over to third. Drew Martinez stepped to the plate next, clubbing a chopper to first where Bonfe fielded it and made an errant throw home. Pulfer would score and Martinez would advance to second on the error. Del Valle stepped to the plate next and ripped a single down the line in left that bounced off of third base rolling into left field allowing Martinez to wheel in from second. Gary had come back and taken a 3-2 lead.
The RedHawks went down in order in the top of the ninth to end the ball game. Gary completed it’s 13th comeback win of the season, while the RedHawks lost their ninth one-run contest of the year, and now is 3-9 in one-run games.
Mike Noteware takes the loss in relief for Fargo-Moorhead and is now 1-3 on the season while Gary’s Shawn ONeill keeps his record perfect at 2-0. Chuck Fontana earns his second save of the season. The RedHawks drop to 10-28 while the RailCats improve to 19-17. The two teams will return tomorrow night with Taylor Stanton taking the hill for Fargo-Moorhead.
