'Hawks Escape 5-3 in 11 InningsKANSAS CITY, KS – In an extra innings thriller, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks escaped with a 5-3 win in eleven innings over the Kansas City T-Bones before a crowd of 3,014 at Community America Ballpark. It was all RedHawks early on. One swing of the bat by Joe Dunigan gave Fargo-Moorhead a 1-0 lead in the second. Dunigan took the first offering from Kansas City starter Dustin Loggins and launched it over the fence in right field for the first run of the game. The ‘Hawks would tack on a run in the fifth and sixth inning. In the fifth it was Zach Penprase who would walk and wheel to third on a Drew Muren single before being driven in by Chad Mozingo. Allowing a base on balls would hurt the T-Bones again in the sixth. Joe Dungian led off with a walk and would later be brought in by Charlie Valerio on an RBI groundout to short giving Fargo-Moorhead the 3-0 lead.
Tyler Alexander started on the mound for the RedHawks and was outstanding. After hitting leadoff man Starlin Rodriguez in the first, he went on to retire 11 straight batters taking a no-hitter into the fourth inning. Adam Bailey sent a double into the alley in right breaking up the no-no. Adam Bailey would step to the plate and hurt the RedHawks in a big way in the bottom half of the sixth. Alexander had retired six straight before walking Nate Tenbrink with two outs followed by a Jake Blackwood double putting runners on second and third. Bailey took the second offering and sent it over the fence tying the game with one swing of the bat making it 3-3 after six innings. Alexander would cruise through the seventh and eighth. He faced eight batters, allowing just one hit and would return for the ninth looking to go the distance. He made it 8.2 innings before allowing runners to first and second. Manager Doug Simunic handed the ball to Tyler Thompson to get the final out and he forced Sergio Leon to line out to Penprase at short sending it to extras. In the top of the tenth Zach Penprase collected his first hit of the game as he singled to leadoff. He would steal second easily but was thrown out trying to swipe third. Simunic disagreed with the call and let third base umpire Kyle Goluba know about it. Simunic was ejected and Mozingo would be stranded at second later in the inning. The game would play on into the eleventh frame. Joe Dunigan would start on second due to the International Rule. With Luke Bailey at the plate, Dungian bolted for third and would advance on a Fernando Hernandez balk. Kansas City pitching coach Bill Sobbe strongly agreed with Goluba’s call and was also ejected. Taylor Oldham would walk two batters later bringing up Charlie Valerio. Valerio would send a dribbler to former RedHawk Brent Peterson who was stationed at second and Peterson made an errant throw allowing Dungian to score and Oldham to scoot to third. With runners on first and third Ryan Pineda proceeded to send a grounder to short and Peterson made another throwing error trying to turn the double play. Oldham would score making it 5-3 RedHawks. Closer Mike Nesseth came on to close down the eleventh. He allowed runners on first and third before getting Peterson to fly out to right ending the game while earning his 12th save of the season. Nick Cooney (1-0) earned his first professional win after recording the last out of the tenth inning while Fernando Hernandez (3-6) took the loss for Kansas City. RedHawks starter Tyler Alexander went a strong 8.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with a walk and a career high ten strikeouts but earns the no-decision. The RedHawks take two of three and improve to 25-48 while the T-Bones fall to 39-32. Fargo-Moorhead will return to Newman Outdoor Field tomorrow night for a three game set with the Gary Southshore RailCats before traveling to Winnipeg to take on the Goldeyes in a three game weekend series.
