Rally Falls Short, RedHawks Lose 4-3 To Flyers![]() Ed Almonte pitched eight strong innings in front of 3,679, as the Flyers defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 4-3 at Alexian Field in Schaumburg, IL on Monday night.
The RedHawks got the scoring started in the third starting with a leadoff walk to Carlo Cota. Jeff Stevens hit a deep double to the left field corner to make it an early 1-0 lead. The Redhawks had a chance to do some more damage in the third, but Almonte got Nic Jackson to hit into an inning-ending double play.
The Flyers bats woke up in the fifth with a leadoff triple by left fielder Lyndon Poole. Richard Mercado wasted no time at the plate, ripping a single up the middle to even the score.
The game stayed tied at one until the bottom of the seventh, where Lyndon Poole was in the middle of the action once again, this time dropping down a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt by Richard Mercado moved Poole up to second. A wild pitch by starting pitcher Jeffery Icenogle put Poole on third, and with one out Tony Mansolino hit a deep sacrifice fly to left field to score Poole, making it a 2-1 game.
As the game moved to the bottom of the eight inning, right fielder Victor Ferrante gave the Flyers some much needed insurance with a two-run home run, scoring Travis Brown, at a towering 410 feet.
Those runs proved to be valuable as closer Jason Richardson gave up a two-run home run to Randall Simon to cut the lead to one. However, Richardson got Jeremiah Piepkorn to ground out to second baseman TJ Wilson for the final out of the game.
Ed Almonte was brilliant tonight for the Flyers, tossing eight innings of one-run ball, scattering three hits while striking out four to improve to 5-9 on the season.
Jeffrey Icenogle suffered his first loss of the season, giving up three earned runs over 7.1 innings while walking four and striking out six. Icenogle now stands at a 2-1 record on the season.
With the win tonight, the Flyers improve to 34-43 on the season, while the RedHawks fell to 41-34 on the season, holding onto third place in the process.
Game two of the series is tomorrow night. LHP Carmen Pignatiello (6-8, 6.16) will take the hill for the Flyers, against LHP Broc Coffman (8-5, 5.96) of the RedHawks. First pitch is at 7:05. |
