Goldeyes Slug RedHawks in Winnipeg![]() In the top of the first inning, it appeared as if it would be a long night for the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Turned out, it was a long night for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Despite falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, the Goldeyes roared back with a run in the bottom of the first, four in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth and three more in the eighth as Winnipeg beat the RedHawks 13-5 in front of 6,112 at Shaw Park. With the win, the Goldeyes improved to 55-38 on the season and lowered their magic number to clinch the American Association’s North Division to three. “In the first inning, I thought, “Woooo, here we go,’” said Goldeyes starter Luis Villarreal. “But my hitters came right back and picked me up and from that point on I just wanted to throw strikes, get guys out and let my hitters get back up there. It makes it easy for a pitcher when your hitters have it going and they were hot tonight.” Down 2-0 on a two-run homer by C.J. Retherford in the top of the first, the Goldeyes scored one in the bottom half as Price Kendall doubled and came home on a single by Brian Myrow. In the second, Wes Long and Lou Ott each walked and Long scored on a double by Fehlandt Lentini. Ott scored on a ground out by Ridge Carpenter and then Kendall doubled home Lentini. Kendall came around to score on a single by Myrow. The Goldeyes scored one in the third on a solo homer by Long and then added two more in the fourth on a two run bomb by Myrow. In the eighth, the Goldeyes added three more, highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of Justin Bass. In the fifth, Lentini hit a solo homer and then after a single by Kendall, Myrow drove in his fourth run of the game with a double. The Goldeyes finished with 13 runs on 17 hits. Myrow led the way with a single, double and a home run. He also scored a run and drove in four. Long (who had three hits), Lentini and Bass also homered for Winnipeg. For Fargo, Retherford hit a pair of homers and drove in three runs. “It’s all about confidence,” said Villarreal. “After the first inning, it was just basically don’t get too picky. Just work from the inside of the plate, out.” Villarreal (7-3, 4.25) got the win for the Goldeyes. He allowed four runs on seven hits over 7.1 innings. Trevor Longfellow (1-2, 6.17) suffered the loss for Fargo. Wednesday night at Shaw Park, the Goldeyes and RedHawks play Game 2 of this four-game series.
