Joliet Uses Big Inning to Top RedHawks 7-4![]() The Joliet JackHammers defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 7-4 in front of a standing room only crowd of 5,046 at Newman Outdoor Field on Friday night. The JackHammers improve to 17-29 and the RedHawks fall to 20-21. JackHammer’s starter LHP Ryan Gehring (3-3) earns his third win of the season and RedHawks starter RHP Nick Fellman (2-4) suffers the loss.
JackHammer’s CF Adam Klein drew a walk and nabbed his 13th stolen base of the season to leadoff the top of the first inning. Klein scored on a nubber by LF Brad Correll to give the JackHammer’s a 1-0 first inning lead.
RedHawks SS Zach Penprase cracked a one-out single and tied it at one all on CF Nic Jackson’s league-leading 14th double of the season. RedHawks LF Justin Justice knocked out a first-pitch fastball to make it 2-1 in the home half of the second inning.
SS Kevin Rios registered the JackHammer’s first hit of the game with a fourth inning leadoff single. Rios reached second base on a balk by RedHawks starter RHP Nick Fellman. With one out and a runner in scoring position, 3B Andrew Pinckney hit a sac fly to score Rios from third and tie it at two all.
JackHammer’s RF Wally Backman Jr. drew a walk and reached home on C Phil Avlas’s double down the left-field line. With one out and Avlas at second, 2B Gary Harris hit an RBI single to the right-field gap. Rios and Correll hit back-to-back doubles to cap the JackHammers four-run fifth inning.
Jackson led off the RedHawks sixth inning with a seeing-eye single and reached third on a double by 1B Jeremiah Piepkorn, which marked the sixth double of the game. Justice flared to right-field to cap the RedHawks two-run sixth inning.
The RedHawks host the JackHammer’s in the second game of this three-game series tomorrow at Newman Outdoor Field.
