RedHawks Fall 9-5 to Canaries After Rough Eight and NinthThe Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks fell to the Sioux Falls Canaries after giving up three runs in the eighth and two in ninth inning. The sellout crowd of 4,622 fans on the School Day game saw the ‘Hawks fall back to the .500 mark at 6-6.
Fargo-Moorhead struck first in the bottom of the first inning, when Ronnie Bourquin took the ball for a ride over the right field wall, bringing in Sawyer Carroll and C.J. Retherford. The Canaries could not find an answer until the top of the third when they plated two runs, making the game 3-2 at that point.
The RedHawks extended the lead, adding two more runs in the bottom fifth. Carroll got things started with a single, Retherford followed up with a double to right field, and Travis Higgs doing the damage by hitting a two RBI double to the left field.
From that point forward, RedHawks were unable to score any more runs, and the Sioux Falls Canaries took over the ball game, both from the pitching and hitting perspective. The Canaries began their rally by cutting the lead from 5-2 to 5-4 in the top sixth. Sioux Falls loaded the bases with a single and two hit-by-pitches, bringing up Stephen Branca. Branca found a left-field gap for a two RBI double.
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks lost the lead when the Canaries put up a three-spot in the top eighth, taking the 7-5 lead. Chris Duffy singled, Branca walked, and Duffy was able to score on a wild pitch. Brandon Jones brought two of his teammates in for the lead.
Unable to answer in the bottom of the eighth inning, it was Canaries striking again. In the top ninth Sioux Falls added two runs to make it the final, 9-5.
Joe Harris suffered the loss in the relief for the RedHawks during his 1.2 innings pitched. John Brebbia earned the win for the Canaries through his two innings of relief. Josh Giles earned the save, as he entered the game during a save situation in the bottom eighth, when the scoreboard read 7-5 for the Sioux Falls Canaries.
Retherford led the ‘Hawks with his two hits in five at-bats, and Travis Higgs also had a good game, going 2-for-3.
