Boulders Prevail In Extra Innings

(POMONA, N.Y.) – After rallying from a 4-0 deficit, the Rockland Boulders prevailed 6-5 in 11 innings as Jerod Edmondson scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly. It was the sixth straight win for Rockland (48-35) as they swept the RedHawks (38-51).
Boulders starter Stephen Harrold endured a laborious first two innings, giving up a pair of runs in each frame. It started in the first when Nic Jackson singled with two outs before C.J. Retherford launched a two-run home run for Fargo-Moorhead. The RedHawks would tack on two more in the second when Zach Penprase singled with the bases loaded for a 4-0 advantage.
Meanwhile, Brian Ernst kept a streaking Boulders team at bay, throwing five scoreless innings. Ernst had retired seven batters in a row, firing perfect frames in the fourth and fifth. That stretch was eventually broken when Sean O’Hare singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth. He was followed by a bunt single from Junior Arrojo before Matt Nandin sacrificed both runners into scoring position.
Antone DeJesus then delivered a two-run single, cutting the Boulders deficit in half, making it a 4-2 game. With the tying run at the plate, Stephen Cardullo struck out for the second out of the inning, but Jerod Edmondson singled to put the tying runs on base. Ernst was able to avoid the threat by fanning Marcus Nidiffer for the final out.
After a rough beginning, Harrold settled down, holding Fargo-Moorhead scoreless over his final five innings of work. Rockland would threaten again in the bottom of the eighth. After Arrojo flew out to start the inning, Nandin singled and DeJesus was hit by a pitch to put the tying runs on base.
The next batter, Cardullo, popped out to put all the pressure on Edmondson who did not disappoint. The veteran looped a base hit to right field, easily scoring Nandin, and DeJesus slid in just ahead of the tag to tie the game at 4-4. Both bullpens pitched a perfect ninth inning, sending the contest into extra frames.
Retherford led off the top of the tenth with a solo homer off Fray Martinez that just barely cleared the left field wall, putting the Redhawks ahead 5-4. Rockland would not go quietly though as Arrojo singled to open the bottom of the inning before being bunted over by Nandin. He then came home on an RBI single off the bat of DeJesus, making it a 5-5 ballgame, sending it into the 11th inning, and invoking international tie-breaker rules.
Reliever Shawn Gilblair pitched a 1-2-3 top half of the inning, giving the Boulders a chance to walk-off in the bottom half. With Edmondson starting off on second base, Nidiffer bunted him over to third with one out. Giuseppe Papaccio then hit a high fly ball to right that was deep enough to plate the winning run.
