The RedHawks fell 8-1 to the Canaries on Sunday night at the Newman Outdoor Field, as 3,306 fans saw the ‘Hawks give up six runs in the sixth inning, unable to recover from the damage and drop second-to-last game of the regular season.
Neither of the teams were able to get anything serious going, with the RedHawks having the first nine hitters retired by Kyle Ruwe. The Canaries got two baserunners off of Nate Garcia, who got the first start of the year. He let in the first runner in the top of the fourth, when he hit A.J. Kirby-Jones by a pitch, and Carlos Mendez’s double moved him to third. The RBI was collected by Chris Valencia, when he sent the ball to the center field, deep enough for Kirby-Jones to score the first run of the ballgame.
Adding more to the Sioux Falls’ runs was Kevin Dultz in top of the fifth, as he scored the second run for the Canaries. He would lead the inning off with a two-base throwing error by Frank Salerno. Next up was Ty Forney, whose RBI double easily scored Dultz.
Things got ugly for the Doug Simunic’s squad in the top of the sixth inning. Chris Duffy drew a leadoff walk and Carlos Mendez roped a single to right. That wrapped up the night for Nate Garcia. Relieving him was Erik Draxton, who saw nothing but bad luck. The very next batter reached on an error, which hallowed Duffy to score, and a 2-RBI single to Kevin Dultz meant the Canaries were up 5-0. Ty Forney was next up, and he added a single of his own. Even though Draxton struck out Steven Tinoco for the second out, it was to no use, as Brandon Jones tripled to the right field, clearing the bases for two RBIs. Last run of that inning was plated by Kirby-Jones, courtesy of his linedrive single up the middle. After top of the sixth, the Canaries were dominating the RedHawks 8-0.
On the other hand, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks were able to put one sole runner on the bases through the first six complete innings. That was C.J. Retherford with his single in the bottom of the fifth, however, he got caught in a 6-4-3 double play, hit by Brandon Tripp.
The very first run of the evening for the ‘Hawks came in the bottom of the seventh frame. Salerno continued his hitting ways, and with an infield single reached first safely. Ronnie Bourquin would then move him over with his infield single, setting Nic Jackson up for an RBI, which he collected with a base hit down the right-field line. 8-1 Canaries.
On this Sunday night, Nate Garcia was the one suffering the loss (0-4), while Kyle Ruwe takes the win after firing seven innings of one-run ballgame and moves to 6-8. There was no save.
Last game of the regular season is scheduled for tomorrow, Labor Day, at 1pm. Fans are encouraged to come support the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks for the last game. Tickets available at (701) 235-6161 and www.fmredhawks.com.
