Laber Breaks Franchise Win Record As RedHawks End On Winning Note

The Fargo, ND native Jake Laber got his 46th career win, surpassing the great Greg Salvevold, as he shut down the Canaries in 8+ innings of 4-hit ballgame to wrap up the 2014 regular season at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND.

It was the 90’s Day at the ballpark, as Jake Laber got the start on “Laber Day,” on the last game of the season in an attempt to break the franchise win record. Laber was tied with Greg Salvevold before the ballgame.

First run for the RedHawks in support of Laber was brought home by Brandon Tripp, as he collected the RBI on a fielder’s choice, that score Frank Salerno (who previously singled, moved to second on  Nic Jackson’s base hit and then stole third). With that, the RedHawks were on the board with a 1-0 lead.

A bigger cushion for Jake Laber was brought by the line-up in the bottom of the fourth inning. C.J. Retherford got the ball rolling with a double to deep left field. Brandon Tripp then got walked by Matt Wickswat. With nobody out, Travis Higgs laid down a perfect push bunt for a base hit to load the bases. That gave opportunity to Michael Thompson to collect his fourth and fifth RBIs on the year, when he plated Retherford and Tripp. Zach Penprase was up next, and he played a little small-balll baseball, plating Higgs with a deep fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly. Salerno managed to do just the same, which allowed Thompson to score the fifth run of the ballgame (fourth of the inning), 5-0 RedHawks.

While four pitchers for the Canaries got their turn on the mound by the time the seventh inning rolled around, while Jake Laber kept up his stellar performance, going seven strong innings while giving up one sole hit to Brandon Jones in the top of the fourth, and walking only one, while striking out 6 (four swinging and two looking). He would come in to start the top of the eighth, giving up his second hit of the afternoon to Stephen Branca. Another given up hit to Kevin Dultz did not shake Laber, as he got a 5-U fielder’s choice, then struck out the lead-off hitter Steve Tinoco (his 7th K of the afternoon), and then got Brandon Jones to fly out to shallow left field.

Even a bigger cushion for the pitching staff came in a form of two runs in the bottom of the eighth frame. Penprase got a single in his last at-bat of the year, while Kaskadden took yet another pitch in his arm for a hit-by-pitch. With two men out, Nic Jackson did the damage with his 2 RBI triple for the final score of 7-0.

In the top of the ninth, Jake Laber exited the game with no runs given up, mere four hits, one walk and seven strike outs for 8+ innings of a shutout baseball on Monday afternoon at the Newman Outdoor Field, where 3,782 fans came to see the “Laber Day” game. That wrapped up the season for the RedHawks. We hope to see you in 2015, for tickets go to or call (701) 235-6161.
