The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks added two more players to the 2015 roster with the signing OF Drew Muren and LHP Alex Sogard to contracts. It is a reunion of sorts, as Muren and Sogard where teammates in the Houston Astros organization for parts of the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

Muren, 26, joins the RedHawks in 2015 after spending last season with the Gary SouthShore RailCats and Sioux Falls Canaries. After a slow start in Sioux Falls, where he hit .192 with five double, one home run and two RBIs, Muren caught on with the RailCats where he thrived. In 67 games for Gary, he batted .311 with 16 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 37 RBIs and 40 runs scored. Muren’s contract rights were acquired by Fargo-Moorhead as the player to be named later in the August trade that send RHP Nick McCully and LHP Shawn O’Neill to the RailCats.

Muren began his professional career in 2011 after the Astros selected him in the 22nd round of the draft after three seasons at Cal State Northridge. In three seasons in Houston’s organization, including parts of two years with the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks, Muren batted .270 with 46 doubles, ten triples, 11 home runs, 84 RBIs and 148 runs scored in 274 games.

Muren, who bats left and throws right, is also expected to see time on the mound for Fargo-Moorhead in 2015. He began his college career as a two-way player at Cal State Northridge, and was 3-5 with a 4.95 ERA in ten games (eight starts) as a freshman. He has been working out and attending tryouts with Major League organizations this winter as a pitcher.

Sogard, 27, joins the RedHawks after spending the past five seasons in the Houston and Arizona Diamondbacks organizations. Last season, he was 1-1 with a 2.91 ERA and two saves in 25 games with Corpus Christi, then was traded to the Diamondbacks. He appeared in 15 games with the Mobile BayBears of the Southern League (AA), where he was 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA.

In his career, Sogard is 10-12 with a 4.38 ERA and nine saves in 170 games (13 starts). In 325.0 innings pitched, he has allowed 186 runs (156 earned) on 343 hits with 278 strikeouts and 129 walks. Sorgard was originally selected by the Astros in the 26th round of the 2010 draft by Houston after finishing his college career at North Carolina State University.

“Both Drew and Alex should be major contributors to our team in 2015,” said RedHawks Manager Doug Simunic. “They have both had success at high levels, and Drew was a player we really liked with Gary last season. We look forward to having both of them in a RedHawks uniform this year.”
