Wingnuts get Walkoff WinWICHITA, Kans. (June 17, 2016) – The Wichita Wingnuts picked up their second walk-off victory of the season Friday night as Martin Medina hit an infield single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to send the home team to a 4-3 victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Trailing 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Wingnuts (15-12) started their comeback. With two down, Brent Clevlen doubled Harrison Kain home, bringing Wichita within one and tying Clevlen for the team lead with 22 RBIs. After scoring in the seventh, it was Kain’s turn to pick up the RBI in the eighth, tying the game with an infield single which brought Medina in. Wichita turned to closer Frankie Reed (3-1) for the top of the ninth, and the southpaw erased a lead-off single by inducing a double play, setting the stage for the bottom half. Christian Stringer started the frame with a single, but was forced out at second for the first out on a fielder’s choice. Clevlen then singled, and T.J. Mittelstaedt drew a walk from Matt Snyder (0-1) to load the bases for Medina. The Wichita backstop chopped one up the third base line to Josh Mazzola who had no play, and Zack Cox touched home to give the Wingnuts their third straight victory, and ninth in their last 10 games. The contest was a pitcher’s duel early on, as neither team got much going early offensively. Wichita’s lone run until their late rally came in the second, when Mittelstaedt led off with a triple, then scored one batter later on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. Fargo-Moorhead (14-13) took the lead in the second off of debuting righty Ryan Kussmaul. An error opened the door for the RedHawks to score a pair of unearned runs in the frame on a Mazzola double and a Brian Humphries sacrifice fly. The lead stayed that way until the seventh, when Bryan Johns added an insurance tally with a run-producing single. The Wingnuts and RedHawks continue their series Saturday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Veteran righty Tim Brown (2-1, 6.27) will get the starting nod for Wichita, while Fargo-Moorhead will counter with fellow right-hander Tyler Herron (3-1, 0.90). |
