40 innings and over 14 hours of baseball were played between the RedHawks and the Explorers. The finale did not disappoint with 12 innings. The X's ended up winning 4-1 to steal the final two games at Newman Outdoor Field.
Offensively both teams were quiet throughout the game. The road team got their run in the third when Ralph Henriquez drove in Jarek Cunningham. The 'Hawks didn't respond until the fifth when Brian Humphries came in thanks to an RBI by Luke Bailey.
Due to the length of the series already, both teams needed good outings from their starters, and they delivered. Despite walking eight, Cody Scarpetta only allowed five hits, one run, and struck out eight for the home team. He threw a whopping 149 pitches. James Walsh also performed well for the X's, striking out nine and allowing only three hits and one run.
As par for the course of this series, it went into extra innings. Both teams threatened, but it wasn't until the twelfth when three runs came across the plate for Sioux City, two of which came on a two-RBI single by Cunningham. The RedHawks put runners on first and second in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to bring any in as this grueling series finally came to a close.
Rob Wort (2-2) got his second win of the day and Matt Snyder (0-2) took the loss. The 'Hawks move to 22-17 after dropping these past two. Their next game will be Friday in Lincoln at 6:35 p.m.
