Hamburger Quiets Bats, RedHawks Fall
The offense this year for Fargo-Moorhead has been feast or famine. Saturday night at Newman Outdoor Field in a 3-1 loss to St. Paul it was famine. In the three games of this series they've scored 1, 8, and 1 after averaging 11 runs in their four prior games.
Mark Hamburger showed why he was undefeated on the season with his performance on the mound for the Saints. He went the whole nine innings and allowed only seven hits, one walk, one run, and struck out seven. Nearly 75 percent of the pitches he threw went for strikes, compared to 61 percent for the RedHawks pitching staff on the night.
In the second inning it appeared as if the RedHawks' offense was in the same form as Friday night when Brian Humphries scored on a double by Kes Carter. That was about as far as the home team would go at the plate, only getting three more hits the rest of the night.
Will Solomon did a solid job on the mound for F-M, but he didn't get the run support needed to pull out a win. The road team tied the game in the fourth with Sam Maus' RBI double. In the sixth Breland Almadova drove in Willie Argo for an unearned run. The ninth had Alonzo Harris adding an insurance run with a solo homer to put the score at 3-1. The 'Hawks followed with Kes Carter hitting his second double of the night, but Hamburger did not allow him to get any further.
Hamburger goes to 9-0 while Solomon (2-1) takes his first loss of the season. The finale between the two top teams in the Northern Division will be Sunday at Newman Outdoor Field, slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
