Walks Doom 'Hawks in 13 Innings
Series in which all of the games are lengthy and grueling battles have become the norm at Newman Outdoor Field. Thursday the RailCats scored four in the 13th inning to earn a split of the four game series by a score of 7-3.
Perhaps the biggest component of the game was the sometimes dominant sometimes erratic play of the home team's pitching staff. They struck out 19 on the night, but still walked 13 including six different innings when they walked the leadoff man for Gary. That came back to bite them in both regulation innings when Gary scored. The road team scored one in the second with John Holland driving in Frank Martinez whom was walked, and two in the sixth when Martinez was hit by a pitch and Jose Gonzalez followed with a home run.
The home team scored their runs in the second and fifth innings. Brian Humphries and Dustin Geiger were driven in by Luke Bailey and Bryan Johns to take a 2-1 lead after two. K.D. Kang's solo home run in the fifth was followed by Martinez' two-run shot in the sixth to even the game at 3-3.
In the extra innings both teams had multiple chances to bring runners home but couldn't convert. It wasn't until the 13th when the 'Cats scored four runs with two outs thanks in part to four walks and an error in the inning. F-M couldn't answer in the bottom of the inning and the RailCats stole their second game of the tight four game series.
Dan Sattler (2-2) was the losing pitcher for the 'Hawks who're now 27-26. Andy Roberts (3-1) was the winner for the 28-25 RailCats. The RedHawks' next game will be Friday at St. Paul, slated for a 7:05 p.m. start. Gary will continue their road trip in Winnepeg on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
