Kang Saves RedHawks in Bottom of Ninth
With 40 innings played in the three games these two teams last played at Newman Outdoor Field, K.D. Kang made sure it did not extend anymore than nine innings on Saturday. His solo home-run in the bottom of the ninth boosted F-M to a 7-6 victory over the Explorers.
Before the ninth it appeared as if the home team would run away with the game. Brian Humphries blasted a homer of his own in the second inning to also score Josh Mazzola and give the team a 2-0 lead. They tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh and eighth innings also. A Kes Carter triple drove in Luke Bailey, and Carter came in on a sacrifice fly by Keury De La Cruz in the seventh. Bryan Johns' two-RBI double widened the margin to 6-0 after eight innings.
Prior to the ninth the pitching staff was stellar with no walks or runs allowed. Despite yielding nine hits to that point, no runs came across for the X's. Then it all unraveled as they allowed six runs on only three hits by the road team. It started with the first two batters of the inning being walked and the next was hit by a pitch. After that an error and doubles by Ralph Henriquez and Michael Lang contributed to the X's tying the game back up at 6-6.
In the bottom of the ninth the first two batters struck out and it seemed likely that another extra inning game was the forecast. Kang didn't like that idea so he took a full count pitch deep over right to give the 'Hawks the win.
Will Mathis (1-3) was the winning pitcher and Rob Wort (2-3) took the loss. The series finale will be Sunday, 1:00 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field
