CANARIES WIN SLUGFEST IN SERIES OPENER![]() FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and Sioux Falls Canaries put on a show for the season high 3,755 fans at Newman Outdoor Field on Friday night as the two teams combined for 20 runs and 24 hits in a 12-7 Canaries win. The teams had seven extra-base hits in the game and scored 13 total runs in the first three innings of Friday night’s game.
The RedHawks’ starting pitching woes continued, as RHP Logan Nissen gave up nine runs on eight hits and four walks in 4.1 innings. Six of those runs came in the top of the first, which extended the RedHawks’ streak of giving up a first inning run to five games. Nissen was replaced by RHP Austin Ver Steeg in the fifth inning. Ver Steeg gave up three runs on three hits and five walks in 2.2 innings. RHP Joe Hallock made his professional debut in the eighth inning and allowed one run in 2.0 innings of work. RedHawks pitchers combined to throw 11 walks in the game.
Fargo-Moorhead opened the game consistently, scoring two runs in each of the first three innings and one run in the 4th inning. However, their bats were silenced by the Canaries relievers, leading to only one hit in the last five innings of the game. Designated hitter Correlle Prime hit his fifth home run of the season and was 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs on Friday night. First baseman Jordan George extended his hitting streak to nine games and went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the game.
The Canaries broke the game open early with a four-hit, six-run first inning. Sioux Falls catcher Shamoy Christopher hit a three-run home run, his first of the season, to jump out to the 6-0 lead. Designated hitter Jabari Henry was 3-for-4 with two walks and an RBI in the game. Eight of the nine Sioux Falls batters had at least one walk in the game and another eight batters reached base at least twice.
Sioux Falls starter Ty Culberth pitched only four innings and allowed seven runs on 10 hits, raising his ERA to 4.24 on the season. Charlie Hasty, who came into the game in the fifth inning, only allowed one hit in three innings of pitching and got the win. The Canaries then used pitchers Colby Wyatt and D.J. Sharabi in the eighth and ninth innings to finish the game.
Fargo-Moorhead and Sioux Falls will continue their series with a 6:00 p.m. game tomorrow at Newman Outdoor Field. The projected starters are RHP Bret Helton (2-2, 5.40 ERA) for the RedHawks and RHP Tyler Garkow (1-2, 5.58 ERA) for the Canaries.
