RedHawks Rally Falls Short in 4-3 Loss To Winnipeg![]() A Winnipeg two-run home run by Josh Mazzola in the top of the ninth proved to be costly as a three-run bottom of the ninth was not enough for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in a 4-3 loss to the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Newman Outdoor Field on June 10, 2012.
Winnipeg scored a run in the first after Kendall Price lead off with a double and crossed home with two outs after a passed ball.
Winnipeg extended their lead off of RedHawks starter Tyler Herron in the fourth. Two consecutive singles by Yurendell de Caster and Luis Alen set-up Josh Mazzola to hit a sacrifice fly with one out to score de Caster and give the Goldeyes a 2-0 lead.
Winnipeg starter Matthew Rusch and Fargo-Moorhead’s Herron both pitched deep into the game for their respective clubs. Rusch shut down the Fargo-Moorhead lineup, giving up only a double to Carlo Cota in the first five innings.
The game would stay nodded at 2-0 until the ninth. With Alen on first, Mazzola helped the Goldeyes with some breathing room as he hit a two-run home run to right center field off RedHawks reliever Tom Boleska to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
The RedHawks struck back in the ninth off Goldeyes reliever Nick Carr. With runners on second and third, Ryan Delgado hit a double to right field to score Zach Penprase and Nic Jackson. Sergio Pedroza picked up his first hit as a RedHawk with a line drive single to center field that scored Delgado and cut the Goldeyes lead to 4-3. However, Carr got Jennings to hit a fly-out to end the game and finish a Winnipeg three-game sweep of Fargo-Moorhead.
Goldeyes starter Matthew Rusch had a strong performance pitching. Rusch pitched eight innings giving up only hits, striking out nine, and walking no batters while improving his record to 3-0.
In only his second start of the season, Fargo-Moorhead’s Tyler Herron also pitched well in eight innings of work. Herron gave up two earned runs on eight hits, one walk, while striking out five. His record dropped to 0-2.
After giving up the two-run home run to Mazzola, Tom Boleska was thrown out of the ball game during the next at-bat. After a 2-1 pitch was thrown behind Goldeyes batter David Narodowski, home plate umpire Steve Linton ejected Boleska. Mike Zenko came on to pitch and struck out Narodowski in his 1/3 innings pitched.
The Goldeyes’ Price Kendall and Luis Alen went 3-for-4 with a run apiece. Mazzola had three RBIs to lead the run producing
The RedHawks had five different players with hits. Nic Jackson led the team batting 2-for-4 and scoring a run while Carlo Cota had the only extra base hit.
The RedHawks (9-14) now head to St. Paul to start a six-game road trip. The Goldeyes (16-6) head home to play the Lincoln Saltdogs. The RedHawks return home on Monday, June 18, 2012, to face the Sioux City Explorers. |
