Two Run Fifth Enough For T-Bones to Down RedHawks 3-2In the first four innings, the 3,661 fans in attendance saw neither of the teams cross home plate, as the score remained 0-0. In that period of time, the Kansas City T-Bones got four base hits, while the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks were able to get only three.
Scoring the first run was Robby Kuzdale, when he crossed home plate safely after Vladimir Frias lifted a long and deep double against right field wall, 1-0 Kansas City. Frias would come around to score as well, courtesy of Danny Richar, who sent a groundball just past shortstop Frank Solerno’s glove to put his team up 2-mill.
The RedHawks attempted to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of that inning. Travis Higgs led things off with a single. Next up was the pitcher Brian Ernst, who was in the line-up in the 9-hole due to Anthony Kaskadden’s injury during the team’s batting practice. Ernst, however, did not manage to lay down the sacrifice bunt far enough from the pitcher Joe Van Meter, who fielded his position and got Higgs out at second, placing Ernst at first with a fielder’s choice. With two outs, Salerno singled to left, but with two outs, Nic Jackson grounded out to a 3-1 putout for the third out, leaving two men stranded with no score for the ‘Hawks.
Making the RedHawks pay for their inability to score was Robby Kuzdale, who in the top of the sixth inning sent Nick Schwaner home on his RBI single to increase the score to 3-0, while Schwaner reached second on the throw to home plate.
That first run came in the next half inning. C.J. Retherford roped a single to the left field on the very first pitch he saw from Van Meter in that inning, moving to second on a wild pitch. Ronnie Bourquin’s groundout to first baseman put Retherford at third, which meant Michael Thompson could collect the RBI with a deep sacrifice fly to left field, putting the RedHawks on the scoreboard for the first time that evening, 3-1 Kansas City.
Adding one more was Travis Higgs with his solo home run in the bottom of the seventh frame. Higgs led off the bottom of the seventh inning. After seeing two pitches, the third one disappeared quickly over the left field wall for Higgs’ fifth of the season.
Brian Ernst suffered the loss on the night (8-6), while Joe Van Meter (2-1) took the win, giving Kris Regas a chance to note his twentieth save of the year.
The action picks up tomorrow at 7:02pm. Tickets available at (701) 235-6161 or www.fmredhawks.com.
